2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 Pricing Announced

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

BMW has announced the price tag of the 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6, which will start at $89,775, including the $875 destination and delivery charge.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is the world’s first Sports Activity Coupé with full hybrid drive offering a driving experience quite unique both in the segment of BMW X models and in the hybrid segment as a whole. Through its combination of a V8 gasoline engine and electric drive, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 offers a significant increase in dynamic performance together with a reduction of fuel consumption and emissions by approximately 20 per cent. This joint enhancement of driving pleasure and efficiency clearly proves that the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is a typical BMW in the hybrid segment.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology offers the driver three significant options: to drive under electric power alone, to use the power of the combustion engine, or to benefit form the combination of both drive modes. Driving completely free of CO2 in the electric mode is possible up to a speed of 60 km/h or 37 mph. The combustion engine then cuts in as required (as a function of load conditions) and is automatically switched off when driving in overrun at a speed of less than 65 km/h or 40 mph.

The drive system featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 consists of a 300 kW/407 hp V8 power unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and two electric motors developing 67 kW/91 hp and, respectively, 63 kW/86 hp. Maximum system output is 357 kW/485 hp, peak torque is 780 Newton-metres/575 lb-ft. This makes the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 the most powerful hybrid vehicle in the world.

Through its unique balance of performance and fuel economy the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 sets new standards both in the hybrid vehicle segment and in the overall market of BMW X models. Acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h comes in 5.6 seconds. Average fuel consumption in the EU5 test cycle is 9.9 litres/100 km (equivalent to 28.5 mpg imp), the CO2 emission rating is 231 grams/kilometre.

Integration of the two electric motors in the two-mode active transmission of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 allows two self-sufficient modes of operation. One mode is for setting off in particularly dynamic style and for driving at low speeds, the second is for driving at a higher speeds under optimum conditions. This ensures all the benefits of BMW ActiveHybrid technology, with maximum efficiency under all loads and at all speeds. At the same time the seven-speed automatic transmission provided by the electric motors together with three planetary gearsets and four multiple-plate clutches ensures all the supreme driving behaviour, smoothness and performance so typical of BMW.

When applying the brakes or taking back the gas pedal kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy and stored in the high-performance battery. To provide this benefit either one or both electric motors act as a generator, depending on driving conditions. The recuperation efficiency and output achieved by the system is 25 times greater than with Brake Energy Regeneration featured so far in BMW’s production models.

Electrical energy is stored in an NiMH high-performance battery with a capacity of 2.4 kWh. The temperature of the high-voltage battery is controlled as required and with maximum efficiency by liquid cooling interacting with the air conditioning and an external heat exchanger.

The central electronic control unit ensures appropriate interaction of the combustion engine and electric drive crucial to the outstanding efficiency and unique qualities of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. It converts high-voltage direct current from the high-performance battery into three-phase alternating current for the two electric motors in the hybrid transmission. It also coordinates all functions of the hybrid system including the distribution of torque and power between the combustion engine and the electric motors as well as the selection of gears.

Over and above the electric motors, the high-performance battery also supplies electrical energy to the power-consuming items linked to the 12-volt on-board network. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is equipped with electromechanical power steering and an electrical climate compressor both remaining fully functional also when the combustion engine is switched off and enhancing the overall efficiency of the vehicle to an even higher standard through their on-demand consumption and uptake of energy.

While braking the generator builds up stopping forces in the electric motors acting efficiently on all four wheels and precisely coordinated with the hydraulic brake effect in accordance with the driver’s stopping and deceleration requirements. This provides not only optimum stopping power, but also the brake feeling so typical of BMW under all driving conditions including the all-electric mode. A further point is that like the BMW X6, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes with Dynamic Stability control incorporating an enhanced range of functions such as Dry Braking and Fading Compensation as well as an electromechanical and hydraulic parking brake complete with an Auto-Hold function.

In its driving behaviour and motoring comfort, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 offers all the standards provided by BMW’s latest X models, without the slightest difference between the electrical and the combustion drive mode. Intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology with permanent, variable power distribution front-to-rear enhances the unique driving dynamics of the vehicle to an even higher standard.

The current operating mode and function of the drive system is clearly presented by appropriate displays in the instrument cluster and in the Control Display itself. The charge level of the high-performance battery
at the disposal of the driver and the current operating mode are shown by appropriate gauges beneath the rev counter. Being informed of the power uptake when driving in the electric mode, the driver may if he
wish maintain that mode longer in the interest of extra efficiency. And if he wishes the driver may also call up information on the current flow of energy in the Control Display.

The particularly prominent Powerdome on the engine lid gives the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 a very distinctive look versus the “regular” BMW X6 as a significant visual highlight. “ActiveHybrid” model designations on the tailgate trim bar and on the front doors, the designation “BMW ActiveHybrid” on the door entry covers on either side, 19-inch light-alloy wheels (or, as an option, 20-inch light-alloy wheels in aerodynamically optimised Streamline design), as well as exterior paintwork in exclusive Bluewater metallic for the first time
on a BMW X6 serve furthermore to highlight the particular character of this unique car.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 combines innovative drive technology with the unique concept of a Sports Activity Coupé. The very progressive and exclusive character of this outstanding vehicle is further underlined
by a particularly wide range of standard features as well as attractive options. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes as standard with features such as comfort seats, automatic air conditioning, cruise control, the
BMW Professional navigation system and Park Distance Control. A further important feature is the electrical opening and closing function on the tailgate. Options include an extended range of nappa leather upholstery in an exclusive Ivory White/Black colour combination complete with double blue seams, a glass sliding/vent roof, a trailer towbar, as well as the complete range of BMW ConnectedDrive including innovative driver assistance systems.

The safety features offered by the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 include frontal and side airbags, head airbags at the side, crash-activated headrests at the front, runflat tyres as well as a Tyre Defect Indicator enabling the driver to monitor the pressure individually in each tyre. BMW Adaptive Headlights complete with a Bending Light function supplement the bi-xenon headlights with their daytime driving lights featured as standard.

2010 Porsche Boxster Spyder Pricing Announced

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Porsche is introducing a new top version of the Porsche Boxster, a light mid-engined roadster making its world debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show in December.

Weighing just 1,275 kg or 2,811 lb, the Boxster Spyder is the lightest model throughout the entire range of Porsche cars. Clearly recognisable right from the start, this new mid-engined roadster represents the true, purist form of the Porsche sports car – light, powerful, consistently open, and very efficient.

This is precisely the formula already applied in creating Porsche’s most successful road-going sports and racing cars, ranging from the legendary 550 Spyder all the way to the RS Spyder so successful in motorsport today.

The Boxster Spyder now continues this clear-cut philosophy with full homologation for the road, thus reflecting a common wish expressed by Porsche customers. The new model is entering the market in February 2010 as the third version in the Boxster range, joining the Boxster and Boxster S.

The new member of the Boxster family stands out clearly at very first sight from the other versions of Porsche’s mid-engined roadster. Quite simply because the Boxster Spyder has been developed first and foremost for driving in the open air, the low-slung, light soft top extending far to the rear serving exclusively to protect the driver and passenger from bright sunshine, wind and weather. When closed, the soft top, together with the extra-low side windows and the two striking bulges on the single-piece rear lid, boasts a stretched and sleek silhouette reminiscent of the Carrera GT.

Significantly less weight than the Boxster S, a lower centre of gravity and an all-new sports suspension give the Boxster Spyder the right kind of driving dynamics clearly reflecting the unique look of the car.

The Boxster Spyder features a 3.4-litre six-cylinder with Direct Fuel Injection upfront of the rear axle. Maximum output is 320 bhp, 10 bhp more than in the Boxster S.

Equipped with PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe and the Sports Chrono Package, the new Spyder, using Launch Control, accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. Again with optional PDK, fuel consumption is a mere 9.3 litres on 100 kilometres (equal to 30.4 mpg imp) in the NEDC New European Driving Cycle. Top speed, in turn, is 267 km/h or 166 mph – with the roof open.

In terms of its fundamental concept, the entire Boxster family is the successor to the legendary 550 Spyder built back in 1953, both models sharing the same mid-engine roadster concept, low weight, back-to-the-roots lifestyle, and supreme agility combined with equally outstanding driving pleasure.

The 550 Spyder was the first sports car from Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen developed specifically for racing but also homologated for the road. In the years following its production, this unique Spyder weighing only 550 kg or 1,213 lb, scored numerous victories on race circuits and in the road races so popular at the time.

The 550 Spyder was followed by other extremely successful Porsche Spyders such as the 718 RS 60 in 1960.

In 2004 and 2008 Porsche dedicated a limited edition of special Boxsters bearing the additional name Spyder to these legendary racing cars. By contrast, the new Boxster Spyder is a regular, specially developed and upgraded production model with far-reaching modifications versus the Boxster and Boxster S.

Market introduction of the new Porsche Boxster Spyder will start worldwide in February 2010. The base price in the Euro countries is 53,100 Euro. Including 19 per cent VAT and national specifications, the market price of the new Porsche Boxster Spyder is 63,404 Euro.

2010 Suzuki Kizashi Pricing Announced

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

American Suzuki Motor Corp. (ASMC) takes a bold step forward with its fall introduction of the 2010 Kizashi. Known primarily as a maker of small vehicles and high-performance motorcycles, December will mark the showroom debut of the 2010 Suzuki Kizashi (pronounced “Kee-Zah-Shee”), the company’s first entry into the all-wheel-drive sport sedan segment. Benchmarked against some of the leading cars in the world, the all-new 2010 Kizashi becomes an instant car-of-the-year contender in its own right. With the launch of the Kizashi, Suzuki delivers a unique blend of dynamic performance attributes and premium design aesthetics and craftsmanship yet to be experienced in this category. Scheduled to arrive in Suzuki’s North American showrooms before the end of the year, the Kizashi will serve as the company’s flagship vehicle, further expanding and strengthening its award-winning product line of high-quality small cars, trucks and SUVs.

“In developing and naming our newest automotive introduction, the Japanese word ‘Kizashi,’ which tells that something great is coming, seemed appropriate,” said Kevin Saito, president, American Suzuki. “Now that the production model Kizashi has arrived, we expect the name and the product itself to clearly demonstrate the bold statement this company knew it would be making with the debut of this vehicle – while simultaneously suggesting what will emerge in the Suzuki lineup as we look ahead to the future.”

The Kizashi sport sedan, which originates from the Concept Kizashi series introduced over the last two years, follows the type of design theme and appreciation for performance previously illustrated by the three eye-catching and immaculately designed concept vehicles. The production Kizashi redefines the traditional performance sedan and moves the Suzuki brand upscale without abandoning Suzuki’s traditional emphasis on content and value. Furthermore, its active and energetic identity, a core component of the Suzuki brand DNA, is augmented by the vehicle’s overall mission to provide a strong, refined urban performance.

Confidence-Inspiring Performance

Built at Suzuki’s brand-new manufacturing facility in Sagara, Japan, the 2010 Kizashi is equipped with a 2.4-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder engine. Benefiting from an oversquare bore/stroke ratio and 10:1 compression, this newest Suzuki powerplant delivers 185 HP (@ 6,500 rpm) and 170 lb-ft of torque (@ 4,000 rpm) with the manual transmission. When mated to the performance-tuned CVT, the 2.4 liter DOHC inline four delivers 180 HP (@ 6,000 rpm). In either configuration it is a more powerful engine than those engines which are standard in many conventional midsize sedans. The twin cam four employs both an aluminum block and cylinder heads, providing a lightweight, compact installation; aluminum pistons with low tensile force rings deliver improved power and efficiency. Drop-forged connecting rods, rotating on a forged steel crankshaft, contribute to the inline four’s durability, and a balancer shaft delivers improved engine balance and reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

The responsive inline four is connected to a six-speed manual transmission, for heightened performance in the low gears, while affording relaxed – and economical – cruising capability in the higher gears. Customers may also opt for an available performance-tuned Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that delivers both the driving experience and fuel efficiency today’s consumers demand, without compromising the character preferred by driving enthusiasts. That character is enhanced with available paddle shifters, optimizing driver control regardless of speed or driving environment. With either transmission choice, the Kizashi is engineered to return competitive fuel economy numbers for America’s growing number of fuel-conscious consumers.

In order to distinguish itself in a saturated segment, Suzuki breaks away from the traditional values normally associated with mainstream sedans and builds on Suzuki’s now well-established belief – via Swift and SX4 – to deliver a dynamic and exhilarating driving experience. That driving experience was validated on Germany’s Autobahn, Switzerland’s Alpine corners, the cobblestone roads of rural England and the legendary Nurburgring.

An exceptionally rigid steel unibody – with reinforced front suspension and multi-link rear suspension constructed with embedded aluminum – allows for crisp, nimble handling with excellent stability, a sophisticated ride and reduced chassis vibration. Engineered from conception to be all-wheel-drive capable, the Kizashi offers a newly developed all-wheel-drive system with highly advanced controls that evokes and promotes a natural sense of driving enthusiasm and safety. Kizashi’s sophisticated braking system offers standard four-wheel disc brakes and includes suppliers such as Akebono, a world-leader in NVH control and analysis and a leading brake supplier for automotive and high-speed rail applications.

All-Weather Capability

Kizashi’s next generation i-AWD system is a rare option in its class, as this safety and performance enhancing feature is more typically found among luxury sport sedan offerings. Engineered to provide outstanding traction in inclement weather, the sophisticated all-wheel-drive system also delivers enhanced cornering capabilities. Activated when the driver selects the “AWD” switch on the instrument panel, power to the rear wheels starts immediately upon acceleration. Torque split remains dependent on several factors, including wheel slippage, throttle and steering input.

Offered in combination with Kizashi’s i-AWD is an advanced electronic stability control system, adding an additional layer of driver control to preclude the need for electronic intrusion that inhibits the driving experience. In the event of vehicle oversteer (a tendency of the rear wheels to lose traction) the synergetic vehicle dynamics control activates the AWD system to transfer driving force from the rear wheels to the front and helps inhibit rear wheel skid. At the same time, the system provides additional steering assist, making it easier for the driver to countersteer.

The Kizashi also offers extensive corrosion protection, including under-body resin panels, zinc plated steel sheets and hot wax embedded in the suspension mounting points. The sport sedan’s all-weather-friendly features continue with three-stage heated seats, heated mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers and a rear seat pass-thru for skis (the seats are also split-fold for those with even larger loads).

The end result is a security blanket provided by both heightened traction and enhanced sensory inputs. Driver and passengers are both better informed of road conditions and – ultimately – made more secure.

Safety Features

The all-new Kizashi includes a class-leading list of standard safety equipment, including class-exclusive standard eight airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP®), an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution and a tire pressure monitoring system. Additionally, the 2010 Kizashi already meets some of the crash standards put in place for the year 2014, including rigorous side pole crash, rear offset collision, and European pedestrian protection standards. Better visibility is achieved in the Kizashi with standard projector beam headlights, supplemental side mounted signal lights, fold-down rear headrests and available rear sonar and backup camera. Enhancing driver confidence, the Kizashi also offers a reinforced rigid chassis for added stability and control.

Premium Feel

Suzuki has taken advantage of its expertise in the compact car segment to efficiently execute larger interior proportions that afford comfort and practicality without the wasted space. Along with cabin proportions that reward Kizashi drivers and passengers with comfort and roominess, Suzuki pursues a contemporary, upscale interior feel – such as standard sport seats – in line with the vehicle’s on-road performance characteristics. Driving enthusiasts will appreciate Kizashi’s sporty and elegant instrument panel, while consumers seeking a luxury sedan will be pleased with the vehicle’s available leather seating and premium quality materials rivaling upscale competitors. The Kizashi also offers extensive sound insulation to help suppress road, tire and wind noise.

The available premium leather is supplemented by three-stage heated seats and a three-position memory program for the driver’s seat. In addition, both cloth and leather seats benefit from Suzuki’s attention to detail: French seams, hard cover rears and high-density, low fatigue foam. Other premium feel details include ambient overhead and footwell lighting, felt flocked glove-box and center console storage tray, soft-woven headliner and a-pillars and leather door pull-straps, all standard.

For those wanting high-tech beyond the engine compartment, the Kizashi’s interior delivers by the megabyte. Beginning with standard keyless push start system, Kizashi also offers iPod®(1) connectivity and optional streaming audio via Bluetooth®(2). For your advanced listening pleasure, Rockford Fosgate®(3) provides an optional listening experience boosted by 425 watts of power pushed through an 8-channel, 10-speaker system, including a subwoofer and advanced digital sound processor.

Grades – and Upgrades

Enjoying a standard level of equipment fully appropriate to its near-luxury aspirations, Kizashi’s base level ‘S’ exceeds any traditional definition of ‘base’ with standard push button start, sport front seats, steering wheel audio controls, automatic dual-zone climate control with passenger rear vents, stability control, 8 airbags and integrated-chromed dual exhaust tips.

For those Kizashi customers wanting more in the way of comfort and composure, the SE adds a standard CVT transmission, 215/55-17 tires mounted on alloy wheels, a 10-way power driver seat with 3-position memory, cruise control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift lever and parking brake lever.

Opt for the GTS and you have your choice of 6-speed manual or CVT transmissions with paddle shifters, 235/45-18 tires on alloy wheels, one-touch moonroof, fog lights, a 425 watt Rockford Fosgate® audio system and integrated Bluetooth® hands-free calling and audio streaming. Kizashi’s top-tier spec, the SLS, adds leather appointments to the interior, three-stage heated front seats, a four-way power passenger seat, Home Link®(4) universal garage door opener, windshield wiper rain sensor and rear parking sensors. In addition, those focusing on where they’ve been will enjoy exterior heated mirrors and an automatic day-night mirror, while those focusing on where they’re going benefit from automatic on/off headlamps.

Kizashi will offer exceptional value versus traditional mainstream, midsize sedans. Its core models will be very well-equipped, offering everything from dual climate control to push-button start, a USB port, 17-inch alloy wheels and eight airbags, yet will still cost between $22,000 to $24,000 – even with available all-wheel drive. Along with Kizashi’s exceptional ride, handling and NVH control, this makes a premium sedan available to the public at a non-premium price. For those who wish to spend even less, a well-equipped base model with many of the same features will start below $20,000.

2010 Mazda CX7 Facelift Pricing Announced

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

2010 Mazda CX7 is a true Sports Crossover. It combines power and comfort in a perfect way to bring unique driving experience. Mazda CX-7 will go on sale 1 November priced at £25,785.

The New Mazda CX-7 Sports Crossover delivers a truly unique driving experience by combining drive characteristics more attune to a sports car, with an imposing road-presence and good everyday practicality. With a powerful and refined 173ps turbo-diesel powertrain, the new CX-7 will take Mazda into a whole new sector of the UK marketplace when it goes on sale in November.

“In the best Mazda tradition, our new Mazda CX-7 enables us to offer a distinctive Sports Crossover that is different from the huge line-up of SUV-type vehicles currently available. With its sporty appearance, new CX-7 is more heavily orientated towards a sportscar in its styling and driving dynamics, while offering an SUV-style commanding driving position and a strong road presence that portrays Mazda’s ‘dare to be different’ brand identity,” comments Mazda UK’s Sales & Marketing Director Mark Cameron.

“The Mazda CX-7’s new turbo diesel engine generates maximum torque of 400Nm from only 2000rpm, with smooth power delivery and real punch from just 1,600rpm, for strong linear acceleration. Together with a five percent stiffer bodyshell, re-tuned suspension, revised gear ratios and lower cabin noise, new CX-7 is a remarkably refined and sporty driving experience,” adds Cameron.

The new Mazda CX-7 is being marketed in the UK as a single, highly specified model, priced at £25,785 (on the road), in a choice of five colours.

Inside, the new CX-7 has generous space for five occupants to travel in comfort, while the sports utility-style rear seat functionality and generous boot space (455 litres with the rear seats upright), makes this Mazda an ideal vehicle for multi-activity lifestyles.

The split rear seats can be folded 60/40 using Mazda’s unique Karakuri system with a one touch rear seat back release located in the boot trim side panel. With the back seats folded, load space becomes 774 litres.

“I am convinced that there is still plenty of life in the UK’s SUV segment and with the Mazda CX-7 delivering sporty handling and a rewarding driving experience the new model sets us apart from our rivals.

“The new Mazda CX-7 is not a huge vehicle designed for the country that will be brought into town – it is a Sports Crossover with plenty of attitude, plenty of versatile ability and great dynamics that out-perform the class. It is the ultimate expression of ‘Zoom-Zoom’ driving excitement in a sophisticated 4-wheel drive sports crossover vehicle,” concludes Cameron.

New adaptations for the UK Market

Manufactured in Japan, the original CX-7 was hugely popular in the USA. For the European and UK markets the car incorporated several significant changes to meet the specific demands and tastes of local consumers.

The biggest changes were to the power and drive trains. The 244ps engine marketed in the USA was replaced by the highly efficient 260ps turbocharged four-cylinder petrol powerunit also featured in the Mazda3 MPS super-hatch model. The CX-7’s fully-independent suspension set-up was also retuned for European roads to deliver handling agility that was unmatched in this class.

Now, for new Mazda CX-7, the focus switches to providing a diesel engine model suitable to the changing needs of the European market in this growing SUV segment. Every new CX-7 sold in the UK features a 173ps, 2.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder MZR-CD diesel engine producing up to 400Nm of torque from just 2000rpm, a six-speed manual transmission with an ‘overdrive’ top gear (0.711:1), and Mazda’s unique Active Torque 4-wheel drive system, which distributes up to 50 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels to maintain traction.

This new Mazda combines sensationally spirited performance, thanks to excellent levels of torque, to deliver strong acceleration and a responsive drive, combined with genuine everyday practicality and remarkable refinement. Meanwhile, combined fuel economy returns 37.7mpg while CO2 emissions are 199g/km.

Generous Equipment, Spacious and Versatile Interior

New Mazda CX-7 has a more dynamic ‘face’ with a larger five-point grille and chrome detailing, a chrome garnish along the bottom of the doors, a larger rear spoiler, new design larger 19-inch alloy wheels and Xenon headlights.

Inside the CX-7 Sport Tech, there are numerous standard premium features including: leather seats, climate control air-conditioning, cruise control, electric front and rear windows, electric driver’s and front passenger’s heated seats, a bespoke BOSE® premium surround sound audio system with 6-CD autochanger and nine speakers, plus integrated satellite navigation and Bluetooth® technology (that enables wireless operation of both mobile phones and playing MP3 devices through the car’s audio system).

Upgraded safety technologies

Naturally, safety is of paramount concern when Mazda designs and engineers its cars and new CX-7 introduces several new items of ‘active’ safety equipment to help drivers cope with the everyday hazards of motoring.

A new Emergency Stop Signalling (ESS) system automatically activates the hazard warning lights whenever the driver brakes abruptly and heavily.

Additional safety is provided by the new Rear Vehicle Monitoring system (RVM), previously available only on Mazda6 and new Mazda 3 MPS. This aid to safe lane-changing uses wide-angle radar units to monitor traffic behind the CX-7 and warns the driver of an approaching vehicle before he/she has a chance to move across into a busy lane by mistake. The system, which is effective in all weathers, also detects vehicles driving in the ‘blind spot’ area and does not monitor or detect cars following behind in the same lane.

Exploiting the computerised electronics of the four-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) system, CX-7 also offers a Traction Control System (TCS), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA).

Like the majority of Mazda models, the CX-7 is equipped with front, side and curtain airbags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners and load-limiters.
