Golf R and Scirocco R top models now available to order

-The most dynamic Golf ever consumes 21 percent less
-Scirocco R: after successes on the track, now also at dealerships
-R Line equipment for the sporty outfit
-1 million downloads of Scirocco R 24h Challenge for the iPhone

Volkswagen are proving that fuel consumption can be reduced even in the sporty high-end class with the 199 kW / 270 PS strong Golf R, which is now available to order. Thanks to a turbocharged high-tech TSI engine, it uses only 8.5 litres – 2.2 litres or 21 percent less than its predecessor.

In place of the six-cylinder engine, which has been typical in this class up to now, the new R models use turbocharged 2-litre, four-cylinder TSI engines. The four-wheel drive Golf R (350 Newton metres of torque at between 2,500 and 5,000 rpm) sprints to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds (5.5 seconds for the Golf R DSG) and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. Two of the many visually distinguishing features of the completely individualized, exceptional Golf are LED headlights and newly developed LED rear lights. The Golf R is available to order in Germany from €36,400 (Germany).

The Scirocco R is an equally exceptional powerhouse with its sharp 2.0 TSI engine, front-wheel drive, unique look and exclusive equipment. Output: 195 kW / 265 PS. Advantages: High performance and torque values with significantly reduced fuel consumption. An average of merely 8.0 litres (DSG) of Super Plus per 100 kilometres flow into the combustion chambers via direct injection, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 187 g/km – the best possible value for a 250 km/h (electronically limited) fast sports car. Eagerly anticipated following its successes at the Nürburgring 24-hour race, the model is now at dealerships from only €33,475 (Germany).

For all of the customers who wish to have especially dynamic bodywork and interior design in the spirit of the enhanced version of the R models, but a petrol or diesel vehicle with less power, the finishing specialists at Volkswagen Individual have designed the R-Line. The Golf R Line and Scirocco R Line can now also be ordered with exclusive features. These include distinctive 17-inch “Mallory” alloy wheels (18-inch optional), roof edge spoilers, R-designed bumpers, high-gloss radiator grill and a likewise black diffuser in the rear section. In the interior, sill panel strips show the R Line family resemblance. Sport seats in new design “Kyalami” with R Line logo in the headrests, a sport steering wheel, pedal covers and footrest in stainless steel round off the sporty image.

The Scirocco R is also successful in the virtual world. In just three weeks, the iPhone application Scirocco R 24h Challenge achieved over 1 million downloads. The high-speed racing game reached the App Store’s number 1 spot in 32 countries, including Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Norway, Japan, Poland, Portugal and Mexico, and is already Volkswagen’s second successful form of mobile marketing after the successful Polo Challenge at the beginning of this year.

2010 Volkswagen Golf Estate VI Pricing Announced

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

In the sixth generation of the world bestseller, this is the fourth body version to be launched after the three- and five-door Golf and the latest Golf Plus. The Estate is one of the most successful models on the market, particularly in the company car market.

The extensive redesign of this Estate should ensure that the all-around talent further extends its position as a business estate car and as a first car for families as well. The base price of the new Golf Estate in Germany is € 18,500, which includes ESP, six airbags, daytime running lights, roof railing, electric windows all around, upshift indicator, electrically adjustable and heated outside mirrors, 1/3 to 2/3 split folding rear bench seat and backrest, central locking with RF remote, climate control, 16-inch wheels and up to 1,550 liters of cargo capacity.

The front end of the Golf Estate was completely redesigned. Its visual appearance follows today’s Volkswagen “Design DNA”. From now on, its appearance will be defined by clear horizontal lines and bold headlight styling. Key engines of the Golf three- and five-door models were also transferred to the Estate. In the interior, high-end instruments of the current Golf set the tone.

Features and engines

At its market launch, the successful Estate (more than 95,000 new vehicle registrations in 2008) will be offered in the three equipment versions Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. The latter replaces the previous Sportline version as the top equipment line. Engines that can be ordered at the start of sales are four petrol engines with a power range from 59 kW / 80 PS and 118 kW / 160 PS and two diesels. The very quiet common rail turbo-diesels (TDI) output 77 kW / 105 PS and 103 kW / 140 PS. The 105-PS TDI may be ordered as a BlueMotionTechnology version. In this case, the already low combined fuel consumption of 4.5 litres fuel per 100 kilometres (equivalent to 119 g/km CO2) is reduced to 4.2 litres (109 g/km CO2).

Exterior

In front, the new Golf Estate is recognised by its modified bumper and radiator grille, new engine bonnet styling and redesigned fenders and headlights; all were transferred 1:1 from the Estate’s three-door and five-door counterparts. In contrast to the previous model, the front-end design is no longer defined by a chrome radiator grille, but instead by a black, horizontal layout of the grille and front bumper painted in body colour. The Estate has an additional large air intake in the lower front section as well. Starting with the mid-level equipment version (Comfortline), chrome inserts are integrated in the radiator grille and the lower air intake. In the top Highline version, this also applies to the surrounds for the front fog lights with new static turning light function, which are a standard feature here.

At the rear, the independent design of the previous model has been upgraded in the new generation by modified taillights with a higher-end appearance and bumpers whose lower area is also fully painted in body colour. From now on, TDI and TSI versions can also be recognised by their tailpipes, which are no longer covered by the bumper. In addition, Volkswagen developed a new range of wheels for the new Golf Estate.

Interior

At the time of its presentation last autumn, the sixth generation Golf received excellent marks, especially for its high-end quality. In the interior, it was especially in the styling of the instruments and gauges where the Golf crossed boundaries to the next higher class and still does. The same instruments, including a standard multi-function display and upshift indicator, are now being used in the new Golf Estate too. Also adopted from the Golf is the new generation of three-spoke steering wheels.

All controls for the new Golf climate control system were integrated in the Golf Estate as well. Volkswagen also adapted its line of different seat covers to the entire model series (Trendline: “Roxy”; Comfortline: “Scout”; Highline: Alcantara/fabric “Merlin”). Also transferred were the radio and navigation systems including the interfaces for MP3 players and Bluetooth mobile telephones. Two driver assistance systems are available as options for the first time in the Golf Estate: “Park Assist” (automatic parking assistant) and “Rear Assist” (rearview camera). Another optional feature is the panoramic sunroof that is popular among many Golf Estate buyers.

Euro-5 engines of the new Golf Estate

Volkswagen is launching the new Golf Estate on the market with four petrol and two diesel engine options; they all meet the emission limits of the new Euro-5 standard. The entry level continues to be marked by an 80-PS petrol engine, followed by a 102-PS version. The two most powerful petrol engines (TSI with 122 PS and 160 PS) and the two common rail turbo-diesels (TDI with 105 PS and 140 PS) may be ordered with the optional Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) as an automatic transmission.

Diesel engines

Like the larger 2.0-litre TDI, the 1.6-litre TDI is also characterised by noticeably quiet noise levels, low emissions (119 g/km CO2) and an extremely low combined fuel consumption value (4.5 litres per hundred kilometres). Compared to the previous model of the same power, fuel consumption was reduced by 0.7 litre. The 140 PS strong and 210 km/h fast Golf Estate 2.0 TDI consumes 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres (132 g/km CO2), which is impressively low considering its power. The TDI engines may be ordered on the Comfortline or Highline.

Petrol engines

As already noted, the petrol engines of the Golf Estate have power levels of 80 PS (MPI), 102 PS (MPI), 122 PS (TSI) and 160 PS (TSI). The base engine with 80 PS is available in the Trendline equipment line; the 102-PS version may be ordered as a Golf Estate Trendline or Golf Estate Comfortline.

Just how efficiently the current petrol engines from Volkswagen perform is well-illustrated by the TSI offered on the Golf Estate Comfortline and Highline. The 6.3 litre (122 PS) and 6.4 litre (160 PS) fuel consumption values of the TSI engines place their combined fuel consumption on par with the already economical base engine with 80 PS. When shifted by DSG, fuel consumption is even reduced to 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres (139 g/km CO2) on the 122-PS TSI and 6.1 litres (143 g/km CO2) on the 160-PS version. This range of engines makes the new Golf Estate one of the most economical and cleanest estate cars in Europe.

2010 Volkswagen Polo 3 Door Pricing Announced

2010 Volkswagen Polo 3 Door

2010 Volkswagen Polo 3 Door

Volkswagen is extending the Polo model range with a spirited three-door version. Its longer doors, new side window styling and the dynamic lines of its C-pillars – compared to the five-door version – give the car a near coupe-like appearance in side profile.

At its market launch this autumn, the extremely stylish, efficient and safe three-door hatchback will be available with seven engine options (from 44 kW / 60 PS to 77 kW / 105 PS) and three equipment versions (Trendline, Comfortline, Highline). The entry-level model will be the three-door Polo 1.2 Trendline with ESP at a price of 12,150 Euros. It will also be available as the new Polo BlueMotion in three and five-door formats; the production version was shown at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in September. This, the world’s most fuel-efficient car in its class (55 kW / 75 PS), has a fuel consumption of 3.3 litres diesel per 100 kilometres (equivalent to 87 g/km CO2). With all these additional versions the Polo range really begins to gather commercial pace. The declared goal of Volkswagen is to accelerate sales of the Polo to match those of Europe’s most successful car, the Golf.

Distinctive styling proportions

The three-door Polo becomes the latest Volkswagen model range to follow the new “design DNA”. This “DNA” was developed by Group Design Chief Walter de Silva. The brand’s identifying new face is a key aspect of this styling. It exhibits a strong horizontal orientation of basic surfaces and a clarity of forms that de Silva refers to as “La Semplicità”.

In the design process, high priority is given to the car’s proportions. Walter de Silva: “A ‘bella automobile’ has perfect proportions. The Polo confirms this to be true.” Striking in this context are the short body overhangs, the car’s broad width in proportion to its height, its prominent wheel housings and powerful shoulder sections. Style defining is the side profile of the three-door Polo. As on every Volkswagen designed under the leadership of de Silva, there are just two key lines here: the upper shoulder line, known as the “tornado” line, and another supportive lower line. Resting atop the dominant tornado line between the upper borders of the headlights and taillights is the roof. The strong shoulder section is also developed from the tornado line. Even more: The upper and lower lines generate an exciting interplay of light and shadow, and despite the design’s simplicity they also create a very muscular modulation of surfaces.

Overall, the three-door Polo has an appearance that is lower to the ground and extended. The reason: Visually, the practically invisible B-pillar and more slender C-pillar give the side windows a longer appearance. This effect is reinforced by the longer upward curve of the side windows from the B-pillar back. This results in an even more dynamic overall feeling.

The body dimensions of the three and five-door versions are identical with a length of 3,970 millimetres, width of 1,682 millimetres and height of 1,462 millimetres. The same applies to the interior space and cargo capacities (280 to 952 litres).

Generous standard features

Even the base version – the Polo Trendline – is being launched with an extensive package of safety and convenience features. A standard feature in all large EU countries is the electronic stabilization program ESP. Other standard features include daytime running lights, power-assist steering, electric windows in front, central locking, loadspace area lighting, warning buzzer for light left on, height adjustment on driver’s seat, vanity mirrors, tinted windows and hill hold control.

Identifying features of the mid-line equipment version, the Comfortline (starting at 14,150 Euros and 51 kW / 70 PS), are body-coloured door mirrors and door handles, H7 dual headlights, chrome trim inserts in the radiator grille and 15-inch wheels. On the convenience side, the car is supplemented by standard features such as an air conditioning system, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, Easy-Entry System (three-door), height-adjustable front passenger’s seat, sliding storage drawers under the front seats, front centre armrest, various accents in aluminium look, split folding rear bench seat/backrest, dual cargo floor, storage pockets on the backrests of the front seats and RF remote central locking.

The exclusive Polo Highline (starting at 15,900 Euros and 63 kW / 85 PS) is characterised by a wide range of individualising features. It is differentiated from the Comfortline equipment version by exterior features that include additional chrome trim inserts in the lower front air intake, 15-inch alloy wheels and front fog lamps. Inside, the Polo Highline upgrades feature a three-spoke leather steering wheel, heated front seats, multi-function display and tyre pressure indicator, height-adjustable sport seats and leather-trimmed handbrake grip and gear knob.

Advanced, fuel efficient engines

At this time, seven engines are offered on the three- and five-door Polo: four petrol and three diesel. The petrol engines are available with power outputs of 44 kW / 60 PS, 51 kW / 70 PS and 63 kW / 85 PS. For the first time, Volkswagen is also offering an automatic 7-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) as an option on the Polo in conjunction with the 85-PS petrol engine. Also soon to be available is a fourth petrol engine, a new fuel efficient TSI. This engine too will be offered with an optional DSG transmission.

In the area of diesel engines, Volkswagen is exclusively offering new common rail TDI engines with particulate filters on three- and five-door Polos. Power outputs are 55 kW / 75 PS, 66 kW / 90 PS and 77 kW / 105 PS. The 90-PS version may be ordered with DSG. The fourth TDI to be offered is the new 1.2-litre TDI Polo BlueMotion. This will be introduced at the beginning of 2010 (advance sales begin in 2009).

2009 Abt Sportsline Volkswagen Polo V Official Revealed

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

The new Polo is an impressive vehicle: Its processing and technology set standards in the small car class – and that is the reason why the worldwide largest tuner of vehicles from the Volkswagen group turned his attention to the Polo. The result is a little sports car in a form which makes a man’s heart beat faster. And which women will also love. From the outside the small car from Bavaria exudes character, the rear spoiler and rear apron insert – both in the expressive carbon look and the double-pipe exhaust make it look bold and dominant. The titan-coloured type Z 8×18 inch ABT wheels suit the car well. In the area of the underside of the door decals with the ABT logo show that the Polo is a pure thoroughbred from the Allgaeu sports car family.

ABT Sportsline of course also offers performance improvements for the Polo. They can give an extra kick to all turbo engines: The 1.6 TDI is available in dif ferent output levels – starting at the series standard engine. For example with ABT POWER, 75 HP (55 kW) is converted into 90 HP (66 kW), and after ABT treatment the 90 HP engine provides 110 HP (81 kW) and the 105 HP (77 kW) diesel engine is increased to a sporty 130 HP (96 kW). The extremely economical 1.2 TSI also provides 130 HP or 96 kW (series standard: 105 HP / 77 kW). The fuel consumption values – and thereby also the CO2 emissions – remain at the level of the series engine. The tuner recommends to use ABT springs for an extra amount of dynamism. Doing so lowers the centre of gravity of the vehicle, and the Polo lies better and safer on the road. The smallest ABT is thereby not inferior to its larger siblings in any way, and offers optimum driving enjoyment with maximum everyday usability.

2010 Volkswagen Caravelle and California

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Hanover, 19th August 2009. The Transporter, Caravelle, Multivan and California – these are the four basic versions of an internationally best-selling vehicle so popular that is has sold in the millions. For its huge fan base, people like service providers, trades people, families, business people and globe trotters, these multi-talented vehicles are an automotive way-of-life, a symbol for endless mobility and variety. A few weeks after the Multivan and California are premiered at the IAA in Frankfurt in September 2009, a new generation of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle’s successful models will hit the roads. The new perfected version gives out even fewer emissions as well as being more efficient, economical, comfortable, elegant, intelligent and safer than ever before. Advance sales for all four basic versions will start at the IAA.

-New Common Rail TDI drops fuel consumption by up to 1.9 litres
-New front design in keeping with the stylistically refined Volkswagen Design DNA
-New infotainment and driver assist systems for optimum comfort and safety
-New generation of ESP including the hill-start assistant comes as standard in all vehicles

Refinement and high-tech features fit for a bestseller

The bestseller’s body design is now in line with Volkswagen’s new Design DNA. The new front design shows off the series in an even more elegant light. The series, which is known as the T5 by Volkswagen employees, has also been given a huge technical boost. Take the engines for example: the new Turbo diesel engines (TDI) are more efficient, exceptionally quiet and now fitted with a Common Rail Injection system. Thanks to the new TDI, fuel consumption levels have decreased by up to 1.9 litres and CO2 emissions have dropped by 52 g/km, so that all engines now fulfil the EU5 emission standards. What’s more, the new versions come with an optional 7-gear dual clutch gearbox (DSG) – an international first for this class of vehicle! As another optional extra, you can have the new four-wheel drive function (4Motion with 4th generation Haldex coupling), which allows you to drive off-road. Another revolutionary highlight from the new models is that, from the start of the year, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will be offering a 4Motion version in conjunction with DSG. Safety features have been further improved thanks to the standard hill-start assistant, refined ESP, a new hazard warning light for the brake lights (emergency brake lights) and new optional driver assist systems. In addition, the interior is fitted with new instruments, steering wheels, radio/navigation systems and textures on top of ergonomic perfection.

Four new Common Rail TDI and dual clutch gearboxes

With the new four-cylinder diesel engines with Common Rail Injection, the best-selling series in both Germany and Europe sets new benchmarks for both its economy and its kindness to the environment. The TDI (1,968 cm³) comes as either 62 kW / 84 PS, 75 kW / 102 PS, 103 kW / 140 PS or 132 kW /180 PS. The 140 PS engine is boosted by a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, while Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has fitted a two-stage charger with bi-turbocharger in the top of the range 180 PS. This form of downsizing means that, for the first time in the Volkswagen Group, a compression ignition engine is being used in a vehicle of this performance range.

The greatest feature is the fuel-saving capacity. It is the first time in the world that a transporter, van or touring vehicle has been equipped with a 7-gear dual clutch gearbox (DSG), which allows fuel consumption in the 180 PS version to drop by up to 1.9 litres when compared with the previous 6-gear automatic. In the meantime, the 85 kW / 115 PS petrol engine will be carried over and now complies with EU5 emission standards. Compared to previous generations, Volkswagen were able to decrease CO2 emissions and fuel consumption levels by an average of 10 percent across the whole range. In vehicles with a manual gearbox and front-wheel drive, the CO2 emissions and fuel consumption levels* range from 7.2 litres / 190 g/km CO2 (84 PS and 102 PS) to 7.5 litres / 190 g/km CO2 (180 PS): that’s up to 0.9 litres less than ever before.

All four diesel engines respond extremely quickly and almost as soon as you have left idling speed as well! Even the smallest TDI engine with 84 PS has a maximum torque of 220 Newton metres from just 1,250 rpm. The 102 PS version goes to 250 Newton metres from 1,500 rpm, the 140 PS TDI hits a high of 340 Newton metres from 1,750 rpm while the 180 PS TDI propels into the crankshaft with an impressive 400 Newton metres from 1,500 rpm. And of course all versions are fitted with a particle filter.

The Multivan and Co. on track with the new Volkswagen Design DNA

Alongside other new design features, the new generations really stand out with a completely modified front end. Clear, horizontal lines give the series a timeless, elegant appearance. The ribs on the radiator grille are all black. In the Transporter (panel van, kombi, drop-side), Caravelle Trendline and California Beach the ribs are in matt black. Whereas the Caravelle Comfortline, Multivan (recreational and business van) and the California Comfortline (touring van) all feature black, high gloss ribs, each highlighted with a chrome stripe. The top stripe is visibly extended so that it stretches into the newly designed headlights. Also, for the first time, the newly designed fog lights in the rear bumper will act as static cornering lights as well. The rears of the Caravelle, Multivan and California have changed since the previous versions as they now have new rear lights which are in keeping the current Design DNA.

New driver assist systems and additional standard equipment

Depending on the vehicle’s equipment level, the new models are decked out with new 17″ and 18″ alloy wheels as well as new exterior mirrors, refined for improved aerodynamics. And for the first time, the exterior mirrors house the entire antenna system. As another ground-breaking feature in this class, the best-selling vehicles are now available with the Side Assist lane change assistant. As seen in the Touareg, this system uses LEDs in the exterior mirrors to warn the driver of any vehicles in the blind spot. What else is new: the tyre monitor display (TMD). The TMD constantly analyses how quickly the tyres are rotating. By comparing the different speeds, the system detects when the tyre pressure has dropped.

More new features: the Multivan Comfortline now comes with 16″ alloy wheels. The Multivan Highline is now equipped with new 17″ alloy wheels as well as chrome trims on the sides and rear.

The interior which crosses the bridge to passenger vehicles

The models’ interiors have been completely re-worked. Take the instruments for example: With a new design, they are lit in white from behind and highlighted by a chrome frame. Each of the new generation’s models will come with a gear shift recommendation display. The entire collection of radio and navigation systems has also been updated. The new top of the range device is the RNS 510 with touch screen and hard-drive navigation. The optional Dynaudio sound system delivers magnificent concert-hall acoustics. The USB interface, Media-IN, allows you to connect any devices, such as MP3 players, quickly and easily. New features on board are the controls for the semi- and fully-automatic air conditioning systems and the three-spoke steering wheels. Many of the versions have had some additions to their standard equipment. The Multivan Startline has seen some great improvements: for example, compared to the previous model, the new basic model now has a full trim interior and side and curtain airbags for the driver and front passenger. The finished bumper, which comes as standard, highlights the fact that the Startline is a member of the Multivan family.

Last but not least, the Transporter can be ordered with a new double front passenger seat bench which includes an integrated folding stowage compartment. And all this is coming soon: the new generations will be launched in the middle of October.

Key Aspects: The New Golf GTD – World Premiere in Leipzig

-5.3 liter fuel economy and 222 km/h redefine the idea of sportiness
-New Golf GTD with 170-PS TDI: Advance sales begin early May
-GTD and new GTI are conceptual soulmates

After the Polo, the BlueMotion offensive and the Golf GTI, Volkswagen is pulling the next arrow out of its quiver: this time it is the Golf GTD. It is extremely fuel efficient yet exceedingly sporty, and it is debuting as a world premiere at the Auto Mobil International in Leipzig (March 28 to April 05). The GTD code letters carry on a tradition: the first Golf GTD appeared back in 1982 – it was the GTI among diesels. Now Volkswagen has perfected the various aspects of sportiness. The new Golf GTD with its 125 kW / 170 PS is aimed at all diesel fans who value a maximum in dynamic performance. This is where the GTD shows a clear affinity to the new GTI (155 kW / 210 PS). While the GTI is in its own league with an efficient turbo gasoline engine that offers the same performance as far more expensive sports cars, the Golf GTD is making its appearance with phenomenal fuel economy. Every 100 kilometers, just 5.3 liters of fuel flow through the piezo injection valves of the common rail engine that can hardly be pegged as a diesel. That is equivalent to CO2 emissions of just 139 g/km. This contrasts with a top speed of 222 km/h and 8.1 seconds for the sprint to 100 km/h.

Range of about 1,000 kilometer

As on the GTI, the GTD’s 6-speed manual transmission may be swapped out for an optional 6-speed DSG – which in the eyes of many experts is the most efficient automatic of our times. The Golf GTD with DSG reaches a top speed of 220 km/h; it accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds and consumes 5.6 liters diesel on average (147 g/km CO2). These low fuel consumption values take both GTD variants to distances of about 1,000 kilometers on one tank of fuel (55 liters).

The GTD equipped with standard sport chassis and 17-inch alloy wheels (“Seattle” type) bears a close relationship to the GTI, in its highly agile handling properties as well as in its parallels in appearance and features.

GTD exterior

The exterior clearly indicates that this is the sportiest Golf with a diesel engine. Take the front end, for example: the bumper, radiator grille and headlights are a 1:1 match with the GTI. However, the red horizontal stripes in the radiator grille are styled in chrome on the GTD. At the rear, the turbo-diesel sports a modified diffuser. Even though no GTD emblem comes with the car purchase, the diesel version of the Golf can be recognized by its dual chrome tailpipes on the left side of the diffuser (the GTI has one tailpipe on the left and one on the right).

GTD sound

Sound – sporty sound – has not traditionally been a particular strength of diesel engines. However, the GTD’s new common rail engine is different. Since it no longer has a superimposed “hammering” sound that was previously typical of diesels, engineers were able to fine tune its acoustics for the first time. This is accomplished by a special sound generator, which outputs a sonorous tone, especially in the lower engine speed range. The electromagnetic sound generator evaluates engine speed, momentary power demand and vehicle speed data obtained via the car’s CAN bus and tunes the engine sound that can be heard in the interior.

GTD interior

Volkswagen’s GT philosophy is also reflected in the interior. It expresses itself in standard high-end sport seats, a 3-spoke leather steering wheel whose curvature flattens at the bottom (GTD signature in the center chrome badge), leather parking brake lever and leather gearshift boot with stitching in contrasting color. However, unlike in the GTI the color is not red but light gray. The same applies to the sport seats in “Jacky” pattern: The color chosen for the flat-felled seams are an elegant light gray (“Art Grey”) instead of red (“Flash Red”). The seats themselves are styled in a “Black-White” color combination.

GTD safety and convenience

Other standard features of the Golf GTD include details such as a black roofliner and black roof pillar trim, special interior accents, seven airbags including knee airbag on the driver’s side, automatic climate control (“Climatronic”), front fog lights with chrome framing, daytime running lights, ESP, a winter package (with heated windshield washer nozzles, heated front seats, headlight cleaning system and low washer fluid indicator light) and the RCD 210 radio system. Nonetheless, the most important component of standard GTD equipment is still the Common Rail TDI with 170 PS being used in the Golf for the first time.

TDI technology in detail

The 1,968 cm3 displacement engine is from a new TDI generation. It delivers its maximum power at 4,200 rpm. The engine – as sporty as it is fuel efficient – develops its 350 Newton-meter maximum torque between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. Its specific torque is 177.8 Newton-meter per liter engine displacement. The upshot is that in practically any driving situation, the sixteen-valve four-cylinder engine offers power equivalent to that of a six-cylinder sports car engine.

About the technology: Fuel induction is handled by a common rail system. Fuel injection pressures of up to 1,800 bar and special eight-hole injection nozzles achieve exceptionally fine atomization of the diesel fuel. The eight-hole injection nozzles are driven by what are known as piezo in-line injectors. In this process, electrically controlled piezo crystals – boosted by hydraulics – initiate injection in fractions of a second. Compared to conventional solenoid valves, piezo technology enables more flexible injection processes with smaller and more precisely metered quantities of fuel. The results are a very quiet and pleasantly soft running engine, exceptionally quick response and the excellent fuel economy and emissions values already mentioned.

Another feature having a positive effect on the car’s acoustics is the maintenance-free toothed timing belt for the camshaft. The conversion to common rail technology and many other acoustic measures, such as a noise-damping film in the windshield, make the new Golf GTD one of the quietest diesel models in its class. In addition, the GTD will fulfill limits of the Euro-5 emissions standard. Advance sales of the Golf GTD in Germany will already begin in early May. And the prospects for a successful market launch look good. Because this sporty Volkswagen fits in perfectly with our times.
