2008 Renault Koleos Himalaya & Super 8 Ads

“4×4 outside, Renault inside”, the baseline for both ad campaigns, underlines the vehicle’s genuine off-road qualities while enhancing the customer purchase, be it rational (choosing Renault for its ingeniousness and renowned minivan expertise) or emotional (choosing the brand for the values it represents: friendliness and open-mindedness).

The first campaign, “Super 8”, is intended mainly for Western Europe, where cars reflect lifestyle. Designed as a “Brand” story, the campaign pays homage to famous Renaults from the past, retracing a half-century of automotive innovation. Since the legendary AG type “Taxis de la Marne”, Renaults’ popular and emblematic cars have made a lasting impression that people recall with fond memories of shared times. From the 4L to Twingo via the Renault 5 and Espace, models of the Renault range have always transported their occupants with conviviality on all types of terrain. The “Renault Spirit” is also suggested in the music of the ad, “I’m Free” by the Rolling Stones, which alludes to the “revolutions” of the 20th century as seen from behind the wheel of Renault cars.

The second campaign, “Himalaya”, targets countries where cars tend to express the social status of their owners. With a firm focus on the essence of the Koleos product qualities – real off-road capabilities but without any compromise on comfort for passengers – the ad features experienced mountain climbers who climb to the top of a mountain only to find a family and its Koleos.

The “Himalaya” ad will be aired from May 26, followed by the “Super 8” campaign from June 1 in Europe.

2008 Renault Laguna Coupe

Renault has chosen the glamorous weekend which sees the Cannes Film Festival coincide with the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix to take the wraps off Laguna Coupe. The flowing lines of the newcomer`s elegant, uncluttered design express timeless beauty and the promise of sheer motoring enjoyment. Its performance provides unprecedented pleasure behind the wheel thanks to the combination of its Active Drive chassis equipped with four-wheel steering – which has been acclaimed by the media across Europe on the GT version of Renault Laguna – and the two new V6 powerplants which have been introduced at the same time as this image-forging vehicle. The brand new V6 dCi, which is poised to become a benchmark in terms of performance and pleasure, delivers 235hp (173kW), while the new 3.5-litre petrol-powered V6 offers 240hp (175kW). Laguna Coupe stands out as an inspiring, four-seater with genuine sensual appeal and will be shown in further detail at the forthcoming Paris Motor Show in October.

Saturday May 24 saw Renault President Carlos Ghosn arrive at the foot of the illustrious steps of the 61st Festival International du Film de Cannes at the wheel of Renault Laguna Coupe. The occasion marked the first public showing of the new model`s definitive, distinctive lines and was a fitting way for the carmaker to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its exclusive partnership with the famous film festival. Renault Laguna Coupe also profited from the weekend to make a guest appearance around the track of the 66th Monaco Grand Prix to showcase its sporting credentials. Two Laguna Coupes completed several laps of Monaco`s legendary circuit in the hands of ING Renault F1 Team test drivers Lucas di Grassi and Romain Grosjean, providing the many thousands of spectators with a unique and unexpected show.

Renault Laguna Coupe bears a close resemblance to the racy concept car revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007, while its elegant styling and proportions boast all the hallmarks associated with truly exceptional coupes. Its distinctive front end suggests the presence under the bonnet of the finest Renault-Nissan Alliance engines which have been designed and developed to ensure supreme driving enjoyment. Indeed, Renault Laguna Coupe is capable of accelerating from standstill to 100kph in less than seven seconds, and this upper-range performance combines with the Active Drive chassis and four-wheel steering to deliver optimum pleasure at the wheel.

Head-turning, racy styling
The flowing lines of Renault Laguna Coupe`s elegant, uncluttered design express a blend of timeless beauty and the promise of sheer motoring enjoyment. There is no mistaking the legacy it has inherited from the show car unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007 and from the Renault Laguna range at the top of which it is destined to preside. With a length of 4.64 metres and a width of 1.83 metres, its proportions are nicely balanced, while the character line which stems from the grille rises forcefully along its flanks, like a wave of air, gracefully underpinning the design of its front wings before extending rearwards to highlight its muscular haunches. The glazed area of its windows is shown off to its best advantage by a pure, flowing arc. Sitting on its 17- or 18-inch aluminium alloy wheels, Laguna Coupe`s stance exudes a sense of dynamism and power thanks to a wheelbase dimension of 2.69m and a height of 1.40m. This sensation is echoed by the pronounced crease-lines of its long bonnet and by its new variant headlamps. The rear, meanwhile, features a very short overhang and broad, slim lights which give Laguna Coupe a bright, distinctive lighting signature which suggests refinement and power, especially at night when the indicators form a halo that picks out the contours of the thin red LEDs.

Four-wheel steering for an exceptional ride
Developed jointly by Renault Engineering and specialists from Renault Sport Technologies, Laguna Coupe`s technologically-advanced chassis guarantees the ultimate in dynamic performance. Its outstanding agility and stability set new standards when it comes to safety and surefooted handling, while the new car corners with unrivalled directional precision as if it were on rails. Following its introduction on the GT version of Renault Laguna, this chassis has naturally been carried over to Laguna Coupe and is particularly suited to being powered by the new car`s V6 engines. At low speeds, the Active Drive chassis and four-wheel steering system enhance manoeuvrability and it takes drivers no time at all to familiarize themselves with their characteristics. In town, as well as on twisty roads, the car is easy to drive and offers outstanding handling precision. It makes choosing the optimal cornering line intuitive and further enhances the pleasure experienced behind Renault Laguna Coupe`s wheel, a feeling reinforced by the absence of transient dynamic phenomena through turns and by its directional precision at small low steering wheel angles. On the active safety front, the Active Drive chassis equipped with four-wheel steering excels not only under braking in difficult conditions (asymmetric grip, deployment of ESP), but also when taking avoidance action (the so-called `elk test`).

Meanwhile, the high level of travelling comfort ensures peace of mind for all occupants who can sense Laguna Coupe`s unrivalled active safety.

Powertrains with pedigree
Under the bonnet of Renault Laguna Coupe, the brand-new V6 dCi, which is destined to become a benchmark in terms of performance and driving pleasure, develops 235hp (173kW) and peak torque of 450Nm. The same figure for the petrol 3.5 V6 powerplant, which is mated for the first time with the AJ0 automatic six-speed transmission it shares with the diesel engine, is 330Nm, while maximum power is 240hp (175kW). In this configuration, Renault Laguna Coupe can accelerate to 100kph in less than seven seconds. Renault Laguna Coupe also naturally benefits from the best engines available for Laguna, in particular the top performing versions of the range`s two-litre petrol and diesel powerplants.

Immersive experience with Microsoft®`s Deep Zoom technology
Friday May 23 saw the inauguration of a bespoke Renault Laguna Coupe website. Building on the success of the Renault Laguna launch in 2007 (inside new laguna), the experience has been carried over for customers who wish to find out more about Laguna Coupe. The www.laguna-coupe.com website has been developed in an exclusive European association with Microsoft®. Thanks to a landmark innovation known as Deep Zoom technology, it has been designed to evolve constantly depending on the latest news to offer an immersive experience at the very heart of this exceptional coupe.

Renault Laguna Coupe will be shown in greater detail at the forthcoming Paris Motor Show and will be available for international media road tests immediately after that. As the spearhead of the Laguna range, it has been designed to offer sheer driving pleasure and plays a key role in the Renault`s brand`s expansion in the upper-range market. Renault Laguna Coupe epitomizes this savoir-faire when it comes to motoring enjoyment and quality which is built into its genes and which can be seen in the finish which matches even the most demanding standards. Laguna Coupe will be introduced progressively across the Renault sales network from mid-October featuring a long list of luxury equipment.

2008 Renault Koleos

Renault’s longstanding MPV experience combined with the 4×4 technology already proven on existing Alliance models, ensures that its all-new 4×4 crossover, Koleos, benefits from a rich heritage of expertise.

Koleos is Renault’s first-ever entry into the growing crossover segment, boasting MPV levels of comfort and interior space combined with robust exterior styling and genuine off-road ability. Its practicality is evident in its split-opening tailgate, 70 litres of stowage space and impressive boot volume of up to 1,380 litres with the rear seats folded. Off-road, Koleos excels with innovative features such as Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control system, the ‘all mode 4x4i’ system developed by Nissan for the X-Trail (which shares the same platform with Koleos), and approach and departure angles of 27 and 31 degrees respectively.

As well as the four-wheel drive, Koleos will also be available in permanent two-wheel drive form appealing to those who enjoy its distinctive, crossover looks and spacious MPV-like versatility complete with high visibility driving position, but have no need to use the vehicle off-road.

Performance engines and value for money prices

Renault Koleos is offered with a choice of two diesel 2.0-litre Alliance engines, the dCi 150 and the dCi 175. Unusually for a 4×4 crossover, Koleos is available with six-speed gearbox and in manual or automatic transmission.

Prices start from £17,995 for the Koleos Dynamique dCi 150 4×2 manual, rising to £24, 695 for the Privilège dCi 175 4×4 manual.

CO² emissions for Koleos range between 191 and 221 g/km, with Koleos versions falling into Band F for CO² emissions.

Koleos beats the competition

Renault may be a newcomer to the 4×4 crossover segment, but it already beats some of its closest competitors in a number of areas including price, standard equipment, boot space, approach/ departure angle and warranty.

Expected best-seller, Koleos Dynamique S dCi 150 4×4 is priced at £20,495 – £1,295 cheaper than the equivalent Honda CR-V SE and £1,275 less than the Tiguan SE. Koleos Dynamique dCi 150 4×4 beats Ford’s Kuga Zetec on price coming in at £18,995 compared to Kuga’s £20,495 – £1,500 more than the Renault.

Koleos’ standard equipment list is also impressive, especially compared to its rivals who can only offer features that are standard on Koleos, such as fog lamps and enhanced comfort features you’d expect on a 4×4 such as cruise control, as options.

Renault’s continual improvements in the quality and durability of its products are further enforced with Koleos’ three-year, 100,000 miles warranty offering complete peace of mind. Some competitors just can’t match Renault Koleos in terms of warranty with the VW Tiguan, Ford Kuga, Toyota RAV4 available with three-year, 60,000 miles warranty and the Honda CR-V offering three-year, 90,000 miles.

The approach and departure angle, at 27? and 31? respectively, offered by Koleos is amongst the best available on the market and substantially better than some competitors, positioning Koleos as one of the most versatile, stylish and practical vehicles in its segment. Ford Kuga’s approach and departure angle is 21? and 25? respectively, whilst VW Tiguan offers 18? and 25?.

All prices include VAT and fitting.

Koleos is available in four metallic illusion colours, Sandstone Green, Cascade Silver, Carlton Black, Slate Grey, and one non-metallic, Alpine Blue.

New technology and features for Koleos

Koleos features some new-for-Renault technology, benefiting from the knowledge and expertise of the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

The Hill Start Assist function on Renault Koleos is just as useful for everyday motoring as it is off-road. The system is automatically activated on gradients of more than 10% to prevent the vehicle from slipping back down the slope. It also means there is no need for the driver to switch rapidly from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal which is inherent in other vehicles.

The Hill Descent Control system offers even safer off-road motoring. This function is activated via a switch on the central fascia and automatically holds the vehicle’s speed at a maximum of four mph on downhill gradients of 10% or more without the need to use the brakes. Particularly useful when Koleos is use off-road, this system also contributes to active safety since it allows the vehicle’s downhill speed to be controlled on steep, snowy or icy slopes. It also works in reverse gear, too.

Koleos’ navigation system has a number of specific off-road features, including an altimeter and barometer. The vehicle’s angle of inclination, the slope and an altitude graph are equally displayed, while a digital compass takes the stress out of finding the correct heading when there are no signposts to be seen. This system uses data transmitted by elements already used for other functions, including the ESP sensor.

The ‘Super-fold’ system, introduced on New Laguna Sport Tourer, enables the 60/40 split-rear seat base to tip forward and backrest fold down all by the flick of one switch in the boot. With the rear seat in the folded position, the boot floor becomes entirely flat to further facilitate loading. The boot volume of 450 litres with all five seats in the upright position extends to a very generous 1,380 litres once the rear seat has been folded. The available space can also be compartmented thanks to the presence of several hooks which enable the multipurpose retention net to be fixed in a choice of ways. In keeping with Koleos’ calling as a vehicle designed for outdoor leisure activities, its rear seat backrest is equipped with a ski hatch. The back of the front passenger seat can also be folded down to either form a table or permit the transport of items of up to 2.60m in length.

Koleos benefits from all the active and passive safety features you’d expect on a Renault. Euro NCAP results will be revealed later this year.

Renault Megane Fernando Alonso Edition

Renault Megane Fernando Alonso Edition

Renault is celebrating the return of Fernando Alonso and the success of Renault Megane with an international advertising campaign
• Fernando Alonso chose Renault Megane F1 Team for its top-level reliability and outstanding performance, comparable to a Formula One car
• With more than 13,000 units sold in 40 countries in 2007, sales of Renault Sport and Renault F1 Team cars (Megane and Clio) doubled in one year
• Renault has built more nearly 7.5 million Meganes since launch in 1995

Fernando Alonso is back at Renault, once again racing for Renault F1 Team. With its “We all feel something special when we buy a new car” baseline, the new international ad campaign has a mischievous, easy-going feel, underlined by the use of the song “Cheek to Cheek”, by Fred Astaire for the TV commercial. In the ad, Fernando Alonso is getting ready to leave his hotel but is waylaid by a series of chance encounters. Throughout them all, he retains the attitude of a true gentleman and the winning smile of a man who has it all. He finally leaves the hotel in his Renault Megane F1 Team, looking happy and satisfied.

Since launch in 1995, Renault has sold nearly 7.5 million units of Renault Megane, which has become a benchmark in the compact family car segment for its reliability and performance.

Renault’s link with Fernando Alonso demonstrates its ambition to position itself as a full-line manufacturer with a sporty image. The objective is fourfold:

- Express the brand’s human and enthusiastic values
- Apply racing values to its production cars
- Give customers access to motor sport
- Unify and gain the loyalty of owners of sporty Renault cars

Renault Electric Vehicles in Europe by 2011

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

The Renault-Nissan Alliance actively supports the initiative of Project Better Place which announced today its second deployment in Denmark.

Renault will provide Danish customers with 100% electric vehicles at European standards in 2011, providing zero emission mobility while at the same time offering driving performance similar to a gasoline engine.

Nissan, through its joint venture with NEC, has created an advanced lithium-ion battery pack that both meets the requirements of this electric vehicle and can be mass-produced.
In Denmark, the conditions necessary for electric vehicles to be successfully mass-marketed are being brought together. The Danish government will provide tax incentives on 100% electric vehicles, Renault will supply the electric vehicles and, Better Place Denmark will construct and operate an Electric Recharge Grid across the entire country.

This announcement follows the January 21st 2008 signature of an MOU in Jerusalem by Renault and Project Better Place for the first mass-marketed electric vehicles. This second deployment illustrates the major role played by the Renault-Nissan Alliance to bring to mass-market zero-emission cars.

2008 Renault Laguna GT In Detail

2008 Renault Laguna GT

Stylish, expressive Renault Laguna GT introduces the new Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering (4WS), developed jointly by Renault and Renault Sport Technologies to yield the ultimate in driving pleasure, as regards handling, response and precision. Its sporty calling is further enhanced by the availability of two exclusive, high-performance engines (180hp/131kW and 205hp/150kW). Thanks to its combination of advanced driving pleasure at an affordable price with a three- year/150,000km warranty, Renault Laguna GT stands out as an innovative offer in the sports saloon market.

Five months after its release, almost 42,000 Renault Lagunas have already been sold in 30 countries. In western Europe, 51,125 orders have already been taken, the majority of which have specified diesel power (87 per cent) and top-end equipment levels (Dynamique: 43 per cent; Privilège: 19 per cent; Initiale: 12 per cent). Since the start of 2008, Renault Laguna’s market share has grown constantly, fuelled by the Estate version (already six per cent of the D segment in western Europe as of end-February). Despite the massive wave of model renewals recently, this segment continues to erode at an average yearly rate of six per cent.

The GT version of Renault Laguna, which is powered by two bespoke engines, places the accent on enjoyment and efficiency to deliver outstanding yet reassuring and pleasurable on- road performance, an experience to which its even more precise and responsive chassis and accomplished four-wheel steering technology amply contributes. With quality an overriding concern throughout its design and production, Renault Laguna ensures a reassuring ride for all occupants thanks to its class-topping active and passive safety and a raft of practical features. Meanwhile, Renault Laguna GT’s crisp, distinctive styling belies its top-end positioning within the Laguna range in terms of technology and powerplants. Available in saloon and estate form with a three-year or 150,000km warranty, Renault Laguna GT goes on sale in France from April 12 and then gradually across the majority of Europe by the summer of 2008.

Four-wheel steering for an exceptional ride
The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering brings many benefits, starting with improved manoeuvrability, extremely rigorous dynamic response, and unequalled steering precision which gives the driver truly intuitive control over the cornering line, to attain new heights in driveability and active safety. The steering is immediately reassuring and agreeable, even at low speeds. In town and on winding roads, the car is easy to drive: manoeuvrable and precise.

Advanced roll control, with specific settings and reinforced seat support, gives the impression that Renault Laguna GT corners flat, without leaning into the bend. The driver is pleasantly surprised by the lack of transient dynamic phenomena when cornering, and by the extreme precision achieved by very small steering wheel angles. The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering also excels in active safety, both under difficult braking conditions (with good control over asymmetrical grip, and ESP matched to sporty driving styles), and during avoidance manoeuvres at speed (‘elk’ test).

Impressive low-speed manoeuvrability
The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering makes Renault Laguna GT exceptionally easy to handle in town and superbly agile on winding roads. At speeds of less than 60kphh, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels, up to an angle of 3.5°. This brings two advantages: a smaller turning circle, for easy manoeuvring; and smaller steering wheel angles thanks to the more direct, specially calibrated steering.

With four-wheel steering on the Active Drive chassis, Renault Laguna GT has a 10 per cent smaller turning circle than with two-wheel steering: 10.80 metres (the same as Clio!) with 18- inch tyres, instead of 12.05m. The greater the rear-wheel steering angle, the smaller the turning circle. Enhanced manoeuvrability is especially remarkable in tight parking situations and along narrow city streets.

With front wheels and rear wheels turning in opposite directions, the car effectively pivots, which means smaller steering angles are needed for the same turning effect. Whereas it takes a 16° steering wheel angle to produce a 1° turn in the front wheels on New Laguna, it takes just 13.5° with the Active Drive chassis. And this drops to 12° when the rear wheels are turned at the maximum 3.5° angle in the opposite direction to the front wheels. Because steering is more direct, with less need for wide steering wheel angles, the impression of manoeuvrability and agility is greatly enhanced. For any given bend profile, the driver will need less action on the steering wheel. This makes for more effective avoidance, with the car seeming to weave effortlessly around obstacles.

Ultra-precise steering control
From 60kph, the emphasis is on steering precision. The rear wheels turn simultaneously in the same direction as the front wheels, to enhance stability, almost as if the car were running on rails. The Active Drive system with four-wheel steering counters the centrifugal force that tends to push the rear end outwards round bends, and thus raises the safe cornering speed. The rear axle is set on the ideal trajectory, with a rear-wheel angle of less than 2° in most situations, for stability and efficacy. The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering enhances dynamic handling, with sound, reassuring response for outstanding driving pleasure.

Unparalleled active safety
The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering also improves safety for heightened reassurance during avoidance manoeuvres. In an emergency situation, the rear-wheel angle can rise to 3.5°. Cut-in of the ESC (Electronic Stability Control) system, specially configured for a sporty driving style, is delayed, so that the manoeuvre can be performed both safely and more swiftly. ESC only switches in when necessary, and is applied gradually because it is synchronized with the rear-wheel turn action. Via the ESC/ABS unit, the 4WS control unit also detects asymmetrical braking situations, adapting the rear-wheel turn angle automatically to keep the car stable with no driver action required. This helps the driver keep control during critical situations, and ensures uninterrupted peace of mind during everyday driving conditions.

Dynamic control logic
Developed jointly by Renault and Renault Sport Technologies, the Active Drive chassis with four- wheel steering implements electronic control of vehicle dynamics. A sensor on the steering column sends steering wheel angle information via the CAN network to the 4WD control unit, located behind the rear axle. The 4WD control unit also inputs vehicle speed from the ESP/ABS unit. And it tracks steering wheel angle information to detect sharp steering wheel movements symptomatic of a sports driving style or avoidance situation. All these parameters are analysed to determine the required rear-wheel turn angle, which is implemented by means of an electric actuator on the rear axle. Dynamic vehicle behaviour is precisely modelled to set the ideal vehicle trajectory at each instant, on the basis of the driver’s input and the actual situation of the vehicle. The controller and electric actuator are supplied by Aisin, a Japanese equipment supplier reputed for its experience in four-wheel steering systems.

High-performance engines
The diesel version of Renault Laguna GT is powered by a 2.0 dCi engine, best-in-class for performance, driveability and acoustics. In this implementation, it yields exceptional peak power of 180hp (131kW) at 3,750rpm. Peak torque of 400Nm is available from 2,000rpm, for prompt, consistent, sustained build-up through to 5,000 rpm. A reduced-inertia variable-nozzle turbocharger enhances dynamic response at low revs to achieve superlative performance: 29.6 seconds for the 1,000m standing start, and 0 to 100kph in 8.5 seconds. This new unit is fitted with a particulate filter and EGR valve with enhanced cooling, which makes intense driving pleasure perfectly consistent with environmental protection: mixed-cycle fuel consumption is just 6.5 litres/100km, which translates into CO2 emissions of just 172g/km. With its ultra-fast glow plugs, the 180hp 2.0 dCi unit roars into action instantly when the Start button is pressed, even in conditions of extreme cold (down to -23°C).

The petrol version of Renault Laguna GT is powered by a sports version (205hp/150kW at 5,000rpm and 300Nm from 3,000rpm) of the two-litre 16-valve unit, derived from Renault Sport technology as featured on Mégane Renault Sport, and specifically reworked for Renault Laguna GT, to yield the best in performance, handling and intense driving pleasure. It is superbly versatile, combining velvet smoothness with astonishingly crisp response, ideal for sports usage.

Design features such as the special air-intake system and twin-scroll turbo ensure the rev- counter leaps forward at the slightest touch of the throttle. Renault Laguna GT 2.0T accelerates from 0 to 100kph in 7.8 seconds and takes 28s to cover 1,000 metres from standstill. Yet fuel consumption is a very reasonable 8.2 litres/100km, which makes for CO2 emissions of just 194g/km.

Distinctive GT styling
With its distinctive streamlined profile, Renault Laguna GT expresses an elegance that goes much further than sporting aptitude alone. The long plunging bonnet terminates in a highly assertive front-end with a radiator grille characteristic of the most powerful Renaults. Purposeful- looking lateral air-intakes suggest an insatiable appetite for the open road, corroborated by the wise gaze of the headlamps against the neat black background. Renault Laguna GT is fitted with generously sized 225/45 18-inch special high performance Bridgestone Potenza tyres, a Formula One spin-off, mounted on special Celsium wheels. The highly efficacious braking system uses 320mm diameter discs at the front and 300mm discs at the rear. Aerodynamic sills reflect the promise of the Active Drive chassis extend from the front of the car to the characteristic straight-section twin tailpipe at the rear. Sports tourer attributes run through to every last detail, such as the gloss black wing mirrors and smoked rear lamp units.

Sports interior
As well as appearing on the outside centre pillar, the exclusive GT logo is also embossed on the light grey alcantara of the front seatbacks. As on all Renault Laguna models, the interior design exudes a most impressive sense of comfort and quality, in all seats. Sports design details abound, highlighting the exclusive capacities of the GT version: special three-spoke leather sports steering wheel with grey stitching, cross-drilled aluminium pedal, sports gearshift lever knob, dark charcoal Riviera leather upholstery with reinforced lateral support. Extreme attention has been paid to materials and finish, true to the car’s unwavering commitment to pure motoring pleasure.

Equipments and technology
The Renault Laguna GT range starts with the Dynamique equipment level and features a long list of top-end equipment selected to favour travelling comfort, including a three-mode (Soft/Auto/Fast) dual-zone automatic climate control system complete with toxicity sensor and automatic air recycling. Driving comfort is enhanced by the availability of parking brake assist, cruise control with speed limiter and automatic headlamp and wiper activation, while acoustic comfort was dialled into the model from a very early phase in its development thanks to features that have made Renault Laguna a benchmark in this area, too. Nothing has been left to chance on the active and passive safety fronts either. Renault Laguna and the GT version particularly excel in terms of their active safety performance as demonstrated by the latest EuroNCAP test results. Its principal innovation concerns improved side impact protection thanks to a twin impact sensor system and new-generation double thorax/groin airbags.

The affordable overall equipment and performance package of this flagship version sets it apart on the sports saloon marketplace and ensures the ultimate in reassuring driving pleasure.

Advanced technology for an unforgettable ride
Four-wheel steering systems of the 1980s were essentially mechanical, with the front and rear wheels linked and pre-determined angles aimed at making up for shortcomings in the vehicle’s handling (e.g. a tendency to understeer). Such systems were gradually superseded by the advent of ESP. Meanwhile, towards the end of the 1990s, carmakers like Nissan were beginning to develop solutions based on electrically- and even hydraulically-operated activators with a view to taking the dynamic performance of their vehicles forward. Electronic control of the rear wheels has enabled handling to be fine-tuned even further, notably in the case of rear-wheel drive vehicles.

The Active Drive system builds on this approach by ensuring a more dynamic and more reactive response to make the absolute most of the inherent qualities of Renault Laguna GT’s remarkable chassis and consequently deliver even greater driving enjoyment. In addition to the complex modelling of the vehicle’s handling, real-time response to the driver’s instructions (every 10ms) and its ability to adapt to different conditions, New Laguna GT’s Active Drive four-wheel steering system means that active safety systems are only required as a very last resort, which means drivers benefit from more efficient and even more reassuring reactions when faced with an unexpected driving situation.

Renault Laguna GT’s stylish looks express an elegance that goes much further than sporting ability alone. The lines of its long, steeply-raked bonnet highlight the purposeful front-end and grille which is redolent of the most powerful Renaults. The car’s forceful character is further underpinned by its lateral air-intakes and headlamps with black masks. Renault Laguna GT sits on specific, generously sized 225/45 18-inch Bridgestone Potenza tyres, the DNA of which can be traced back to Formula 1, while the special Celsium wheels barely conceal 320mm diameter discs at the front and 300mm discs at the rear which provide plenty of braking bite.

The promise of the Active Drive chassis is also exuded by the aerodynamically designed sills which extend from the front of the car to the characteristic straight-section twin tailpipe at the rear. Sports tourer attributes run through to every last detail, such as the gloss black wing mirrors and smoked rear lamp units.

Sports interior

As well as appearing on the outside centre pillar, the exclusive GT logo is also embossed on the light grey alcantara of the front seatbacks. As on all Renault Laguna models, the interior design exudes a most impressive sense of comfort and quality for all occupants.

Nearly two years into its growth plan, Renault Commitment 2009, the fruits of the Renault Group’s unprecedented product offensive continue relentlessly. Following a raft of unveilings at the Geneva and Frankfurt motor shows last year, the former will be the setting next month for no fewer than four new Renault world debuts, plus a major announcement regarding the future of its value brand, Dacia.

Initial details for two of the new Renault models at the show have already been released in recent weeks, namely the eagerly-anticipated Twingo Renaultsport and Koleos, the company’s first compact 4×4. Sharing the limelight will be the new ‘GT’ performance version of New Laguna, with its four-wheel-steer chassis honed by Renaultsport. Further details of this new sports-oriented upper-medium challenger will be released on Friday, 22nd February.

Completing the quartet will be arguably one of the company’s most striking and seductive concept cars. However, no preview information will be released. Following the unprecedented acclaim for the Laguna Coupé Concept at Frankfurt in October last year, the latest beauty to emerge from Renault Design is likely to prove the show-stealer in Switzerland. Like the car itself, details are being kept firmly under wraps until Press Day on 4th March.

Renault Group will be hosting two Press conferences on Tuesday 4th March. Patrick Blain, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, will host the Renault event, taking the covers off of the concept car at 08:15 CET on Stand 4130. Later in the day, a Dacia Press conference is scheduled for 13:45 CET on Stand 5030, which will be given by Béatrice Foucher, Product Director.
