2010 Mitsubishi i MiEV breaks cover

Posted by: Carnews | Comments (0)

Excitement is building as the first 25 full production all-electric Mitsubishi i-MiEV’s arrive at Bristol’s Royal Portbury Docks. Final preparation has already begun before the cars hit the road on December 12th 2009 as part of a West Midlands based government trial.

The i-MiEV’s left Japan by boat six weeks ago and their arrival has been eagerly awaited, especially by the end users and everyone following their progress via Mitsubishi Motors UK’s i-MiEV Facebook fan page.

i-MiEV – Leading The Market

The multi award winning Mitsubishi i-MiEV is a fully electric city car and the first real-life EV with zero tailpipe emissions made available by a mainstream manufacturer. It’s a genuine car, ensuring no compromise in cabin space, seating 4 adults and room for luggage.

It has a top speed of 81 mph, a range of 100 miles and can be trickle charged from flat to full in 6 hours at any UK three-pin socket – and it only costs 96p for a full charge.

An Early Sales Triumph

The i-MiEV, on sale in Japan since July this year, has been a sell-out success. The 1,400 units allocated by Mitsubishi for the 2009 Japanese market have flown out the door and an impressive 900 orders have already been placed in Japan from the 2010 build allocation.

European production will begin in October 2010 with left hand drive i-MiEV’s available in markets across Continental Europe towards the end of the year.

Real-World Trials

The cars are taking part in one of the Government’s Ultra Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator projects, run by the Technology Strategy Board. Through an extensive selection process, members of the public have been selected by consortium partner, Coventry University, to trial the cars for 12 months allowing analysis of driving and charging behaviour.

The West Midlands CABLED (Coventry and Birmingham Low Emission Demonstrators) consortium combines the expertise of Arup – design and engineering consultant and project leader, power provider E.ON, the city councils of Birmingham and Coventry, three academic institutions, and five other car manufacturers, and is supported by Advantage West Midlands.

Tommy Kaira Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart breaks cover

Posted by: Carnews | Comments (0)

The Japanese tuning company decided to publicly release the first set of official renderings/photos of their latest project. To be more precise, Tommy Kaira has been working on a modified version of the JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart which also known as Mitsubishi Colt-R. It is important to mention that previously Tommy Kaira also made a tuning package for the Toyota Prius hybrid, so you can say that they are not all that knew in the branch.

Even though at this time we do not have a lot of information, from the pictures below we get to see that the main features of the Tommy Kaira modified Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart are styling upgrades including a carbon fiber racing strip that runs nose to tail, a redesigned front end with a new grille and a more aggressively styled bumper.

The Mitsubishi and Ralliart brand logos have been removed from the Mitsubishi Colt. This is standard for every project done by the Japanese tuning company Tommy Kaira.

It is also quite possible that the Tommy Kaira version of the Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart will also get other features, including some mechanical upgrades, a newly styled rear bumper with matching side skirts, different alloy wheels and a roof spoiler. Still, this is just a hunch, as we do not have any other photos except the ones below.

A 1.5 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine that has an output of 154 horsepower gives the power of the stock Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart which is available only on the JDM (Japanese Domestic Market). The Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart has its powertrain completed by a Getrag five speed manual gearbox and a front wheel drive system.

2009 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Suv Unveiled at Moscow Show

Posted by: Carnews | Comments (2)

2009 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Suv Unveiled at Moscow Show

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation will unveil its new Pajero Sport*1 SUV model at the Moscow Auto Salon 2008 (The Moscow Motor Show) to be held at the Crocus Expo in Moscow between August 26 and September 7 (opens to the public on August 29). The new Pajero Sport will be phased in selected regions*2 such as Russia, the ASEAN area, the Middle East, Latin America and Oceania starting in the fall this year.

*1 The model will carry a different name in different markets: Montero Sport in South America, Nativa in Latin America and Challenger in Australia.
*2 The new Pajero Sport will neither be sold in Central & Western Europe nor in North America, where other types of SUVs are favored.

The new Pajero Sport features dynamic and sporty exterior lines, complemented by a stylish and vast interior space that engenders a sense of comfort, purpose and safety. This cabin, available in either a 2-row (5-passenger) or 3-row (7-passenger) seating configuration is also very practical with water-repellent seats and a waterproof luggage compartment floor, ideal for leisure use.

Mitsubishi’s latest SUV will be powered by a choice of three engines which all deliver outstanding motive performance and fuel economy: 2.5-liter and 3.2-liter common rail direct injection diesel units and a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline unit*3. In terms of architecture, the body of the Pajero Sport is mounted on a new ladder frame to realize high levels of durability and reliability, consistent with the needs of its target markets.

Mitsubishi’s All Wheel Control philosophy, forged through its participation in the Dakar Rally and other contests, informs all of the company’s 4WD systems. The new model will use the Super Select 4WD system, also used in the Pajero*4 SUV, which transmits drive torque effectively to all four wheels on all types of surface. The body, frame and driveline not only give Pajero Sport outstanding off-road performance but allow it to deliver excellent drive dynamics over all surfaces.

The choice of the Moscow Motor Show to unveil the new Pajero Sport is a clear indication of Russia’s eminent position within Mitsubishi Motors. In fiscal 2007 Mitsubishi Motors sold some 100,000 vehicles on the Russian market, boosted by the ever successful Lancer line-up and a popular range of SUVs.

MMC is confident that the new Pajero Sport SUV will make a strong addition to its SUV range, which also includes the Pajero and Outlander. Coming on the heels of the introduction of the Lancer*5 sports sedan last year, this will allow MMC to expand SUV sales and hit a total sales volume of 140,000 units on the Russian market in fiscal 2008.

2009 Mitsubishi Racing Lancer MRX09

Posted by: Carnews | Comments (0)

2009 Mitsubishi Racing Lancer MRX09

As a real-world test laboratory, Motor Sports birthed some enduring Mitsubishi legends such as the Pajero / Shogun, Lancer and Lancer Evolution. Supporting production car technological realities has been at the heart of Mitsubishi’s ethos, including the recently introduced “Project Global” Lancer Family of Sports Saloon, Sportback, Ralliart and Evolution X.

Motor Sports has also extended the reach of Mitsubishi’s Okazaki R&D Center in areas ranging from 4-Wheel Drive technology to turbo-charging, all applied to its regular production cars and SUVs, from Lancer to Pajero.

A New Era

Now, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has announced a new era of Motor Sports design and engineering with its next-generation racer, the all-new crossover “Racing Lancer”.

With this car, MMC has added a new dimension to its racing activities, blending 35 years of Lancer prowess with 25 years of Pajero epics.

The end result is a cross over between on-road and off-road rallying as well as applying to passenger cars and SUVs. The Racing Lancer will reach a wider marketing audience than any of its predecessors while re-launching Lancer’s racing career.

Sportback Silhouette

Sporting a silhouette inspired by the recently previewed Lancer Sportback 5-door hatch, Racing Lancer will support Mitsubishi’s offensive in the passenger car sector, much like the Pajero Evolution in parallel to the production Shogun in 2006.

Clean Diesel Power

Our sporting heritage and green designs will come together at the forthcoming Paris Motor Show1, where Mitsubishi will launch its framework for its mid-term passenger car strategy for Europe, under the banner of “One segment, One Green Solution”.

The Racing Lancer will become MMC’s key ambassador for diesel technologies. Mitsubishi’s long recognized expertise in engine development as a pioneer in clean emissions, balancing shafts, turbo-charging, and direct injection since the 1970s has again been mobilized to create a diesel engineering center of excellence within the Company covering a wide range of diesel powertrains.

From the all-new 4N13 Euro V 4-cylinder engine to be launched in 2009 to Racing Lancer’s 3.0 liter turbo-charged V6 diesel race engine, all will share the same fundamental know-how and the same essential low fuel consumption and low emissions ‘green benefits’ of Mitsubishi’s diesel technology. The engine is currently finalising development on qualifying rounds of the 2008 Dakar Series and the 2008 FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup.

The MRX09

MRX09 is Mitsubishi’s new codename for its latest cross-country rally challenger. ‘MRX09′ stands for ‘Mitsubishi Rally ‘Cross Country’ (’X'), plus a suffix for the year in which it competes (’09′ = 2009).

The MRX09 features a new, multi-tubular steel frame which has benefited from advanced Computer Aided Engineering analysis with a view to optimizing the layout and dimensioning of the tubing.

The carbon-fibre bodywork of the MRX09 is redolent of the Lancer Sportback, and will come equipped with the same 4WD system, drive train, suspension and brakes – following their modification in accordance with the new technical regulations and as a function of the characteristics of the diesel turbo powerplant.

*1 Lancer in markets outside Japan.
*2 Lancer Evolution in markets outside Japan.

I. Product walkaround

1. Exterior

The car features a unique front bumper designed to reduce air resistance. Increasing the size of the “jet-fighter” grille, an element of the MMC sedan design identity, both improves engine cooling and with the chrome treatment of its perimeter enhances the premium look to the car. The bottom edge of the bumper is designed as an air dam for improved handling and vehicle stability at higher speeds.
The engine hood uses a lightweight aluminum panel with an air scoop to feed the turbocharger; twin air outlets discharge heat from the engine compartment.
The unique rear bumper accommodates twin tail pipes. The bumper’s design enhances airflow control and contributes to better straight-line stability at higher speeds.
The factory-fitted option rear decklid wing-spoiler generates effective downforce.
The grille and trunk lid carry the RALLIART emblem.

2. Interior

The interior uses an elegant deep black color scheme while the dashboard features an ornamentation panel comprising a geometric check pattern and silver pin beading that adds a mechanical taste and gives the cockpit a sporty, high-quality appearance.
The unique instrument cluster dials use matte black faces with white high-contrast graphics for excellent legibility.
The steering wheel and shifter knob are wrapped in luxurious genuine leather. The aluminum accelerator and brake pedals are fitted with non-slip rubber strips.
The front seats keep the occupant securely and comfortably positioned and use high-grip suede-knit upholstery. The shoulder bolster carries the RALLIART tag.

3. Engine

Galant Fortis RALLIART is powered by an intercooler-turbocharged 4B11-type 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC MIVEC*1 high-performance engine. With the focus on low- to mid-range torque, the engine uses a single-scroll turbocharger. Optimization of the cooling and exhaust systems boosts output to maxima of 177 kW (240 PS) / 6000 rpm and 343 Nm (35.0 kg-m) / 3000 rpm.
Galant Fortis RALLIART returns 10-15 mode combined driving pattern fuel consumption of 10.2 km/l (filed with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism), and earns a 3-star rating for emissions that are 50% better than the Japanese 2005 Emission Standards.
*1: Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system

4. Transmission

Galant Fortis RALLIART is fitted with Mitsubishi’s Twin Clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission) automated manual transmission that allows the driver both the fun and economy of a manual gearbox plus the convenience and comfort of an automatic transmission. The Twin Clutch SST used on the Lancer Evolution X has been modified for Galant Fortis RALLIART with different ratios for 5th and 6th gears to give improved fuel economy in high-speed cruising on longer trips.
The driver has the choice of two automated shifting modes: NORMAL for maximum fuel economy and comfort in everyday driving; and SPORT with shift characteristics best suited to sportier performance.

5. Full-time 4WD system

Galant Fortis RALLIART uses a full-time 4WD system comprising a front helical limited slip differential, an Active Center Differential*2 and a mechanical rear LSD. These components as well as Active Stability Control*3 and Anti-lock Braking*4 are all electronically and integrally managed by Mitsubishi’s vehicle dynamics control system to deliver an optimum balance between sure-footed traction and steering feel, cornering and braking performance.
The driver can select between three ACD modes: TARMAC for dry paved surfaces; GRAVEL for wet tarmac or loose unmade surfaces; and SNOW for snow-covered surfaces.
*2: Electronically regulates the speed differential between front and rear wheels and feeds optimal level of drive torque to each wheel.
*3: Improves stability by suppressing wheel spin and sudden changes in vehicle behavior on slippery surfaces or caused by sudden steering inputs.
*4: Retains braking and steering control by preventing wheels from locking up under emergency braking and also uses Electronic Brake force Distribution for the efficient distribution of braking power to each wheel for different road surface and vehicle load conditions.

6. Body and chassis

Galant Fortis RALLIART uses Mitsubishi’s RISE*5 high-rigidity safety body that gives enhanced multi-directional crashworthiness in frontal, rear and side collisions. The front bumper, engine hood, fenders and cowl are designed for enhanced pedestrian protection.
The suspension features stiffer control arms and mountings and the use of high-rigidity cast iron trailing arms at the rear. These changes and optimization of spring rates and shock absorber damping give RALLIART sportier handling, vehicle stability and ride.
RALLIART uses 16-inch 2-pot caliper ventilated disc brakes at the front and with optimization of front and rear systems; delivers braking that matches its higher power output.
RALLIART rides on 18-inch 7JJ alloy wheels fitted with 215/45R 18 89W tires.
*5: Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution

2008 Mitsubishi Colt Attivo Special Edition UK

Mitsubishi has announced the addition of a new Special Edition to its super-mini range with the Colt 1.1 Attivo (meaning ‘energetic’ and ‘lively’ in Italian).

Just like the name suggests, the 1.1 liter engine puts out a healthy 74bhp at 6,000 rpm with 100 Nm torque at 4,000 rpm and 51.4 mpg (combined mode) making this an efficient and nippy little city car.

Standard equipment now sees the addition of 14” alloy wheels and free metallic paint over the CZ1 specification for just a £500 premium, along with Radio / CD player, ABS with EBD, remote central locking and driver and passenger airbags (passenger side can be disabled).

All this comes for just £7,999 for the 3-door and £8,499 for the 5-door and the Special Edition is also supported by some competitive finance packages as customers feel the pinch of the global credit crunch. Low rate finance or 50:50 finance will be offered, with 3-door advertising featuring low rate finance with a £1,994 deposit, and £135 monthly payments at 9.6% APR and 5-door advertising featuring 50:50 finance.

Demonstrator vehicles are already with Mitsubishi dealers with 300 units ready to go as demand is expected to be high with the soaring cost of fuel, and sales of efficient small cars on the increase.

The Colt Attivo is available in Lunar Silver (metallic), Illusion Blue (metallic), Atlantis Blue (metallic), Sparkling Black (metallic) and Spicy Red (solid).

Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X Drawing Customers from German Brands

Posted by: Carnews | Comments (0)

Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X

New research suggests that the all-new Lancer Evolution X is drawing new customers into the brand from premium German and other Japanese marques. A strong value proposition and excellent driving characteristics are just two of the key drivers behind customer decisions.

Part Exchange Analysis

A comprehensive study of customers buying the Lancer Evolution X since it was launched in March 2008 has shown that 38% of the part exchanges offered against the cutting edge Twin Clutch SST (Sports Shift Transmission) have been from premium German brands, while 31% have been from other Japanese competitor brands.

Sales of the manual transmission have been dominated by the FQ-360 variant, with the majority (40%) coming from existing Evo owners. A further 19% of part exchanges came from premium German marques and 20% from other Japanese manufacturers.

Lance Bradley, Mitsubishi UK’s Sales and Marketing Director asserted that, “this shows that the new Evolution X is certainly attracting people out of German cars, especially into the SST, and that the manual gearbox car is not only attracting traditional Evo customers, but also customers of other Japanese marques.”

Furthermore, several super cars have been traded in against new Lancer Evolution Xs, with one dealer handing over a Lancer Evolution X FQ-300 SST and a check for £90,000 against a Ferrari F430.
