BMW 760Li vs Mercedes S63 AMG

Captain Slow ,James makes a rare appearance on the track as he compares two absurdly powerful limos, the BMW 760i and Mercedes S63 AMG, and gets into a strange card game with The Stig.

BMW 760Li
760Li are powered by a completely new 6.0-litre V12 all-aluminum engine with Twin-Turbo Technology, High Precision Injection with fuel injected directly into the combustion chambers, and to BMW’s infinite double-VANOS camshaft adjustment as well as the eight-speed automatic transmission featured for the first time in a BMW. 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 Pricing Announced

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

BMW has announced the price tag of the 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid X6, which will start at $89,775, including the $875 destination and delivery charge.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is the world’s first Sports Activity Coupé with full hybrid drive offering a driving experience quite unique both in the segment of BMW X models and in the hybrid segment as a whole. Through its combination of a V8 gasoline engine and electric drive, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 offers a significant increase in dynamic performance together with a reduction of fuel consumption and emissions by approximately 20 per cent. This joint enhancement of driving pleasure and efficiency clearly proves that the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is a typical BMW in the hybrid segment.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology offers the driver three significant options: to drive under electric power alone, to use the power of the combustion engine, or to benefit form the combination of both drive modes. Driving completely free of CO2 in the electric mode is possible up to a speed of 60 km/h or 37 mph. The combustion engine then cuts in as required (as a function of load conditions) and is automatically switched off when driving in overrun at a speed of less than 65 km/h or 40 mph.

The drive system featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 consists of a 300 kW/407 hp V8 power unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and two electric motors developing 67 kW/91 hp and, respectively, 63 kW/86 hp. Maximum system output is 357 kW/485 hp, peak torque is 780 Newton-metres/575 lb-ft. This makes the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 the most powerful hybrid vehicle in the world.

Through its unique balance of performance and fuel economy the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 sets new standards both in the hybrid vehicle segment and in the overall market of BMW X models. Acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h comes in 5.6 seconds. Average fuel consumption in the EU5 test cycle is 9.9 litres/100 km (equivalent to 28.5 mpg imp), the CO2 emission rating is 231 grams/kilometre.

Integration of the two electric motors in the two-mode active transmission of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 allows two self-sufficient modes of operation. One mode is for setting off in particularly dynamic style and for driving at low speeds, the second is for driving at a higher speeds under optimum conditions. This ensures all the benefits of BMW ActiveHybrid technology, with maximum efficiency under all loads and at all speeds. At the same time the seven-speed automatic transmission provided by the electric motors together with three planetary gearsets and four multiple-plate clutches ensures all the supreme driving behaviour, smoothness and performance so typical of BMW.

When applying the brakes or taking back the gas pedal kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy and stored in the high-performance battery. To provide this benefit either one or both electric motors act as a generator, depending on driving conditions. The recuperation efficiency and output achieved by the system is 25 times greater than with Brake Energy Regeneration featured so far in BMW’s production models.

Electrical energy is stored in an NiMH high-performance battery with a capacity of 2.4 kWh. The temperature of the high-voltage battery is controlled as required and with maximum efficiency by liquid cooling interacting with the air conditioning and an external heat exchanger.

The central electronic control unit ensures appropriate interaction of the combustion engine and electric drive crucial to the outstanding efficiency and unique qualities of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. It converts high-voltage direct current from the high-performance battery into three-phase alternating current for the two electric motors in the hybrid transmission. It also coordinates all functions of the hybrid system including the distribution of torque and power between the combustion engine and the electric motors as well as the selection of gears.

Over and above the electric motors, the high-performance battery also supplies electrical energy to the power-consuming items linked to the 12-volt on-board network. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is equipped with electromechanical power steering and an electrical climate compressor both remaining fully functional also when the combustion engine is switched off and enhancing the overall efficiency of the vehicle to an even higher standard through their on-demand consumption and uptake of energy.

While braking the generator builds up stopping forces in the electric motors acting efficiently on all four wheels and precisely coordinated with the hydraulic brake effect in accordance with the driver’s stopping and deceleration requirements. This provides not only optimum stopping power, but also the brake feeling so typical of BMW under all driving conditions including the all-electric mode. A further point is that like the BMW X6, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes with Dynamic Stability control incorporating an enhanced range of functions such as Dry Braking and Fading Compensation as well as an electromechanical and hydraulic parking brake complete with an Auto-Hold function.

In its driving behaviour and motoring comfort, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 offers all the standards provided by BMW’s latest X models, without the slightest difference between the electrical and the combustion drive mode. Intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology with permanent, variable power distribution front-to-rear enhances the unique driving dynamics of the vehicle to an even higher standard.

The current operating mode and function of the drive system is clearly presented by appropriate displays in the instrument cluster and in the Control Display itself. The charge level of the high-performance battery
at the disposal of the driver and the current operating mode are shown by appropriate gauges beneath the rev counter. Being informed of the power uptake when driving in the electric mode, the driver may if he
wish maintain that mode longer in the interest of extra efficiency. And if he wishes the driver may also call up information on the current flow of energy in the Control Display.

The particularly prominent Powerdome on the engine lid gives the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 a very distinctive look versus the “regular” BMW X6 as a significant visual highlight. “ActiveHybrid” model designations on the tailgate trim bar and on the front doors, the designation “BMW ActiveHybrid” on the door entry covers on either side, 19-inch light-alloy wheels (or, as an option, 20-inch light-alloy wheels in aerodynamically optimised Streamline design), as well as exterior paintwork in exclusive Bluewater metallic for the first time
on a BMW X6 serve furthermore to highlight the particular character of this unique car.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 combines innovative drive technology with the unique concept of a Sports Activity Coupé. The very progressive and exclusive character of this outstanding vehicle is further underlined
by a particularly wide range of standard features as well as attractive options. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes as standard with features such as comfort seats, automatic air conditioning, cruise control, the
BMW Professional navigation system and Park Distance Control. A further important feature is the electrical opening and closing function on the tailgate. Options include an extended range of nappa leather upholstery in an exclusive Ivory White/Black colour combination complete with double blue seams, a glass sliding/vent roof, a trailer towbar, as well as the complete range of BMW ConnectedDrive including innovative driver assistance systems.

The safety features offered by the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 include frontal and side airbags, head airbags at the side, crash-activated headrests at the front, runflat tyres as well as a Tyre Defect Indicator enabling the driver to monitor the pressure individually in each tyre. BMW Adaptive Headlights complete with a Bending Light function supplement the bi-xenon headlights with their daytime driving lights featured as standard.

Prior-Design BMW M6 breaks cover

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

The tuning company Prior Designed, already refined Porsche 997 Turbo, Jaguar XJR and some other sports cars. Now it’s BMW M6’s turn and the project is named – PD550. BMW M6 will get entirely new custom-made body kit consisting of front bumper, rear bumper, side skirts, front fenders.

PD550 is equipped with enormous multi-spoke 9Jx20? at the front and 10.5Jx20? at the rear forged wheels fitted with 255/35/ZR20 and 285/30/ZR20 tyres. There are also 21? rims with the same width and slightly bigger tyres – 255/30/ZR21 at the fron and 295/25/ZR21 at the rear.

The body of BMW M6 is broadened with 80mm, which gave the car massive look. Combined with the huge wheels, lowered suspension and the body-kit, the car looks like a monster on the road.

The car is lowered with 30mm at the front and 25mm at the rear axle to create the perfect combination of aerodynamics.

The car also gets entirely new custom exhaust system to achieve maximum performance of the mighty V10 under the bonnet. May be the project name reveals the real number of the horse powers, which PD550 develops, but there is no official information about that.

All prior-design products are of course TÜV tested and are approved for purchase according to traffic regulations.

2010 Hartge BMW X5 xDrive35d with 328hp

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Extremely elegant – but not extravagant – that’s the new outfit for the X5 xDrive35d from HARTGE. All exterior components are characterised by clear lines. Thus, the front spoiler, the diffuser-like rear skirt and the two-part side sills in PUR-RIM form a harmonious ensemble that, naturally, comes with a ABE homologation (Allgemeine Betriebserlaubnis – ABE).

Thanks to the HARTGE sports spring set with level control system for the rear axle, which lowers the vehicle by up to 30 mm, the X5 does not look like a SUV. This impression is underscored by the set of ‘BRILLANT CLASSIC 2′ wheels. These 22 inch rims for ultra-wide tyres – 295/30 ZR 22 at the front and 335/25 ZR 22 at the rear – are the ideal match for the sporting four-wheel drive car with appropriate
HARTGE emblems. Details such as carbon casings for exterior mirrors and stainless steel tail pieces with oval tail pipes that can be connected to the standard exhaust system underscore the sporting nature of the car.

This is based on a 3-litre diesel engine producing 328 hp (241 kW) at 4400 rpm. With such a forceful power plant, the X5 xDrive35d from HARTGE needs only 6.1 seconds for the standing start to 100 km/h, i.e., significantly faster than the series X5, which takes seven seconds. The extra power is also reflected by a higher top speed, which rises from 235 to 244 km/h.

Weighing 2.2 tonnes, the interior of the X5 xDrive35d from HARTGE is also distinguished by a range of sporting accessories: 3-spoke leather steering wheel with carbon inserts, which also grace the dashboard, a variety of interior and decorative strips and a transmission console made of this high-tech compound. With a silver metallic dial and red needle, the 300 km/h speedometer is a great eye-catcher. Moreover, with aluminium pedals and foot rest coupled with black velour foot mats, even the footwell has that sporting touch that characterises not only the X5 Beau from Beckingen in Germany’s Saarland region but all HARTGE automobiles. And this is hardly surprising because Herbert Hartge, a successful ex-racing driver, brought the spirit of motorsport with him into the company.

All parts are, of course, suitable for retro-fitting. As a complete vehicle, this exclusive X5 costs a total of € 87,277.47 (including 19% VAT).

2010 BMW ALPINA B7 Bi-Turbo LWB breaks cover

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

This will be the 20th Tokyo Motor Show that ALPINA, in partnership with its Japanese importer of over three decades, NICOLE Automobiles, has partaken in with its own exhibition stand.

The first car that was delivered to Japan in 1979, a BMW ALPINA B7 Turbo, is still being driven to this day. Chance has it that the 3000th car bound for Tokyo left the factory gates this year, after precisely 30 years.

Furthermore, the new ALPINA flagship, the BMW ALPINA B7 Bi-Turbo long-wheelbase, will be officially shown to the public for the very first time. This is were it the numbers get even more curious because it turns out ALPINA has altogether delivered 330 7 Series to Japan.

Also shown will be the BMW ALPINA D3 Bi-Turbo, in itself quite remarkable because it is the first clean performance diesel that is available in the Japanese market, a market in which diesel engines could, up to now, only be found in trucks.

Enough reasons hence for ALPINA to again be present at the Tokyo Motor Show,

especially considering that the turn out of other European manufacturers is very thin indeed – with Lotus being the only other one

2010 AC Schnitzer BMW Z4 E89

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

Ready for its world premiere: the extensive product range for the BMW Z4 by AC Schnitzer. Them Aachen-based tuning specialist has further optimised the brand-new classic from BMW, which has already received extensive accolades from the trade press.

The BMW Z4 as standard is far from under-powered. But as is well known, enthusiastic drivers can never have enough power. Sufficient reason then for AC Schnitzer to upgrade the Z4 3.5I Turbo to 286 km/h. With a power of 360 HP and a weight of 1485 kg, the open-top roadster from BMW accelerates from a standing start to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. Even the most demanding driver will be delighted with this performance.

The driving experience is enhanced acoustically and visually by the stainless steel sports rear silencer and the chromed Racing tailpipe trims.

Equally sporting is the AC Schnitzer suspension variant in the Z4. Thanks to a new spring kit, the transverse acceleration appears to bypass the conventional laws of nature.

This impression is certainly partly supported by the aerodynamic components made of PU-Rim, a high quality flexible plastic. The aerodynamic pack for the new BMW Z4 consists of a chrome front grille and front spoiler, where both components combine to give a more muscular look to the long bonnet lines.

New sports fenders, consisting of wheel arches with integral air outlets for improved cooling of the front brakes and chromed deflectors, optimise the side lines of the roadster.

Finally, the two-piece rear spoiler gives the rear of the BMW Z4 by AC Schnitzer an impressive look; because of the performance of the car, this is probably the aspect which will be seen most by other drivers!

In the inside, both driver and passenger enjoy an impressive interior. The aluminium cover for the i-Drive System Controller, the aluminium foot rests and pedal set, are just a few of the ergonomically perfect controls which give the vehicle elegance and enhance the sporting ambience.

Standing on AC Schnitzer Type IV in 18” or Type VI wheels in 18, 19 or 20 inch, the BMW Z4 takes to the stage for its world premiere. A striking entrance from the Aachen specialist, which will certainly not be forgotten in a hurry.
